Well, the crunch has come and I must move. After more than a month of
recycling Intel 80x88/80x86-based gear, the S-100 stuff has now
reappeared.
No idea of the electrical condition of these boards. There are no
manuals. Yes, I know this stuff is more than 30 years old.. I dislike
putting them into a landfill... but I am under the gun to move and the
newer place is a LOT smaller.
Is this stuff worth anything? I dislike EBay: it seems to have become a
haven for auction sniping, scam artists, and fly-by-night thievery. I'm
sure EBay staff does their best..
The list is appended below.
Manufacturer Board Condition
------------ ----- ---------
MITS 88-SIOB Labeled "OK" but has wires
(Serial TTL) all over.
MITS 88-SIOB Looks as bad as the one above.
(Serial TTL)
MITS 88-SIOB Looks as bad as the one above.
(Serial TTL) Label on the board: "Does Not
Print" dated 5/31/82.
MITS 16MCD Rev O. Memory card. I can't say as I
like the assembly job. All ICs
present & accounted for.
Godbout EconoRAM VIIa Four 7805 regulators? All IC's
present & accounted for.
Problem RAM16 This board looks like it was
Solver (Qty: 3) built at the factory. Four
Systems, Inc 7805's on board.
Solid State OB-1 A "Jump Card". Dated 1978.
Music Some IC's. Mostly bare board.
MITS Altair 8800b No EPROMs. All other sockets
Rev O populated. Some burning of the
Turnkey Module board under the TIP30: looks
like something went wrong.
MC6850 UART on board.
MITS Altair 8800b There are two 1702AQ EPROMS on-
Rev O board: HD-EXR 1 of 2 and 2 of 2.
Turnkey Module
MITS Altair 8800b There are three 1702AQ EPROMS
Rev O on-board: "DBL", "0000", "FE00".
Turnkey Module Wires on the back.
MITS 88-4 PIO REV 0 There are two MC6820L's onboard.
(Qty: 2) Many white-wire jumpers,
apparently to determine address?
MITS 88-4 PIO REV 0 There are three MC6820L's
onboard. Many white-wire
jumpers, apparently to determine
address?
MITS 88-4 PIO REV O This board is better grade than
the one above: standard green
coat on the board. Better
assembly job, too.
SSM Solid State An extender card.
Music EXB-1
Solid State IO-4 Someone started building this.
Music All the sockets are in,
transistors, resistors,
capacitors, switches,
etc. But no ICs.
Solid State MB7 16K RAM There is only one open socket,
Music just to the right of the four
DS0026CN 8-pin ICs.
There are a couple piles of paper in the collection:
SSM 8080 Monitor V1
A "features" list on the front page. A listing of the monitor (all in
8080 assembler) Written by "C. E. Ohme" and, no, I'm not posting his
telephone number.
Solid State Music MB8-A
8K/16K EPROM (2708) board
Just the manual. Which, amazingly enough, includes a schematic. No
board.
I take a LOT of issue with your attitude towards E-Bay. Let me add that
I am both a "power seller" and a "top rated seller", but I buy far more
than I sell. I am involved in probably almost 2,000 transactions per
year, probably 85% buying and 15% selling, and my E-Bay account was
opened (same ID that I have today) 12 years ago.
For example: "it seems to have become a haven for auction sniping"; so
what? You are the SELLER. What difference does it make if someone
"snipes" (places a bid in the last 10 seconds of the auction)?
Personally, if I were running E-Bay, no auction would end until some
pre-set interval since the last bid on that item, but that's not the way
it is (or ever was). The rules are the rules, everyone knows them,
there is nothing inherently wrong with playing the game, WITHIN THE
PUBLISHED RULES, to try and "win". But anyone has a reason to be upset
it's the other bidders, not the sellers. And while it may not be the
way you would design the system, the rules are the same for everyone,
published, known and therefore "fair".
E-Bay and Pay-Pal do what they can to keep everyone honest, and for the
most part they do a truly excellent job. This is an environment with
several million transactions per WEEK and tens of millions of sellers
and buyers. There is SOME fraud, but it's truly uncommon if you pay a
bit of attention to what's going on, and, if you get defrauded, E-Bay
and Pay-Pal will generally "make you whole" PROVIDED that you have
followed the rules.
As for "I'm sure EBay staff does their best"; in general, they do.
Understand that E-Bay is a marketplace. E-Bay itself is not a party to
the transactions, they simply provide a place for buyers and sellers to
get together.
Back to your question, "Is this stuff worth anything"? As I said, it
is, but only if you can find buyers for it. This stuff is kind of odd,
the number of buyers in the entire country is probably a couple
hundred to a couple thousand at most. If you don't use E-Bay, exactly
how will you find buyers? There are a few places where you can find
some (this, in fact, being one of them), but the exposure you will have
will be a fraction of what you would have on E-Bay. And so, too, will
likely be the price that you get for the stuff. To some people, that
doesn't matter. But to others, it does, it matters a lot.
PS - There are some items that you have that I would be interested in
(if they end up on E-Bay I will see them, otherwise please feel free to
contact me).

Thanks for posting your offers here but....This is a common situation:
someone decides a week before the dumpster, to post that they have
stuff, and ask "what is it worth" - without providing their location
so someone could make an offer and just pick the stuff up. That's how
things usually work.
Please provide a city/state, and some way you can be contacted, and a
deadline to "move" this stuff. Don't post your home address! Your
posting email address is obviously not your regular email address -
that's fine, "this" address will fill up with spam. But please confirm
someone can respond using THIS email address, and you'll see it. Don't
waste an international email forum (here), with private emails to you
about how to find you, will you ship, and other negotiations that
won't matter ten years from now, as people search posts here.

That's correct. Could be more, but it's whatever someone will pay you.

Therefore, Barry, you are an advocate for Ebay. But extended
discussion of why you do so well on eBay or how it should be run, is
off topic for comp.os.cpm. It's not the only way to buy and sell CP/M-
supporting computers. And, more than a few "old computer"-ists are
unhappy with that venue.

That's about right.

Posting in old computer email discussion groups like this one. There's
probably some Twitter for this stuff for all I know.
Looking on the Web for S-100 and old computer-oriented Web sites,
asking the participants there.
Other buy and sell venues like Craigslist. Other auction sites, for
that matter.
I list some sites and venues related to S-100 and CP/M on this Web
page:
http://www.retrotechnology.com/herbs_stuff/s_point.html
..and my site has supported S-100 for a DECADE. Other sites and venues
have been around for quite awhile. If
"walking" chooses not to use eBay, he'll likely do OK with some
patience and persistence...
> PS - There are some items that you have that I would be interested in...
..as Barry himself demonstrates.

If you would like to post them on the www.S100Computers.com site
(cards For Sale section), send me a paragraph (with some pistures if
possible, possibly the "pile") and I will post them for you.
