From what I've read iMessage claim to be able to send text messages. Does
that apply to mobile phones (cell phones)?
I'm using a iPad 2 and trying to get this to work when sending a text
message to a mobile phone.

Not exactly.

The iMessage protocol is used to send messages via the Internet. It
currently supports only between Apple devices running the Messages app:
iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch running iOS 5 or later, or Macs running OS X
10.8 or later.

The Messages app on the iPhone also supports sending and receiving text
messages (using the standard cellular network text message protocols).

You cannot send or receive cellular text messages using the Messages app
on an iPad (even a cellular model), iPod Touch or Mac.

If you are using an iPhone to send messages, it automatically works out
whether the recipient is able to use the iMessage protocol, and uses
that in preference to sending a text message if it can.

If sending via iMessage then fails for some reason, the messages can be
resent as a text message.

Won't work. iPad's can't send or receive text messages.

(There may be e-mail to text message gateways or similar which could be
used as an alternative, but you may have to pay for the service.)

nothing to do with the actual post...

ah, Michelle, have you gone over to the Dark Side? Is there really an icon of
(gasp, shock, horror) a _Disney_ character on your posts? Do we have to send
out a rescue squad to free you from the Minions of the Mouse?

Turned off iMessage completely?

(There is no way to turn off sending SMS to addresses that aren't
registered with iMessage from the device)

The nice thing about standards, there is enough for everyone to have their own.

I thought I had found a cheap way to send text messages to a mobile phone
but it does not look like it will work. In the end someone has to pay for
the cost of the text message.

It blocks nothing. This simply controls what happens when a messages
sent to an iMessage capable recipient doesn't go to Delivered status
within a few seconds of sending; with the switch on, the sending iPhone
will resend as SMS or MMS automatically. With it off, the user must
initiate this action manually. In either case, sending to SMS is
available.

In all cases, it will still send to non-iMessage-registered numbers via
SMS without further prompting.

This doesn't turn SMS off, it simply controls the behaviour of the
device when the remote side has iMessage, but isn't currently receiving
messages.

>2. Tell your carrier to block all SMS messages to/from your phone.

This isn't an on-device switch.

Press-and-hold the undelivered message and click the "Send as SMS" (or
similar) option.

This option only appears until the original message goes into Delivered
state, once it does, you can't force a SMS delivery.
