Hi,

I have a weird question.

At the moment, I have ONE email server running . So, my 2 MX server are
the pointing out to the same email server..

Now, I understand that , if I install 2 email servers ( -> with 2 MX
servers ) I can use automatically, the second email server IF the first
one is 'out'
That mean, that these emails, arriving when the FIRST Email server is
'out', will go to the SECOND email server.

- How can I retrieve these emails?

My email client is configured to connect on ONE email server ?
How can I configure the thunderbird to collect emails on the SECOND
server ??????

I am confused...

Thanks for your help

Steve,
The MX records point to an SMTP server. Thunderbird points to a POP
or IMAP server. SMTP is the "store and forward" part of the system.
i.e. that is how messages get from host to host.
POP/IMAP servers are where you go to get eMail that has been sent
to you. Thunderbird is both an SMTP client (for sending email) and a
POP/IMAP client (for getting and manage your received email).
On your email server is an SMTP and a POP/IMAP server with
something called an MTA (Mail Transfer Agent) between them. Its
responsibility is to get messages from the SMTP server and make them
available to the POP/IMAP server. Some MTAs don't require that it, the
SMTP and POP/IMAP services run on the same machine. They can receive
messages from more that one SMTP server and provide them to more that
one POP or IMAP server. Thus it doesn't matter which SMTP server
receives the message, they still get put in the same InBox for the POP/
IMAP server(s) to pick up and deliver to you via Thunderbird.
Also, WebMail servers can also get messages from the same "InBox"
that POP/IMAP servers do, which allows FireFox to be your client
instead of Thunderbird.

I hope this helps,
Doug

Hi Doug,

Thanks for your reply.
Ok, let's say that I have a sendmail server ( as MTA ) : ( 192.168.0.1 )
another one ( 192.168.0.2 )
My Thunderbird is getting email to the machine ( 192.168.0.1 ) With a
POP3 protocol

If this server is "out", how can I do ?

- Do you mean that I have to have a 3rd machine as POP3 ???
( I cannot see how I have configure the system )

Thanks and regards,

This is not the intent of a secondary mail server, but in the case you
gave you can do it. Under tools, account settings you will see a
button for "Add an Account". Most all email programs allow for multiple
pop3 accounts.

The real intenion of the secondary mail server is to accept mail until
the mail server is working again, and then to forward the mail back to
the main server.

Hope that helps,
Fred

Hi Fred,

Do you mean that the second email server try to send every email
received to the first email server, until the first server is back online ?

- Is there a specific instruction on Sendmail, which do that ?
- If we declare the email server as a second one, can it do it
automatically ?
- Do you have an configuration example, in order to setup the second
email server that way ?

Thanks and regards,
