I run pine 4.10 and was just switched over to openmail via imap. I've
gotten the features I need running except for selecting email based on
text (keystroke sequence ;/a/b/a, for example). Pine immediately returns
[specified character set not supported]. I have tried configuring numerous
character sets to no avail, despite no problem selecting items this way
from news groups. Any ideas what could be the matter?

Umm, is the key sequence ";/a/b/a" (which is invalid) or ";aba" (which
is a request to bounce all messages in the mailbox)? I'm trying to
determine how this meshes with "selecting email based on text".
I do not believe that "specified character set not supported" is an error
message anywhere in Pine. I think that it is probably coming from
openmail's IMAP server, but I'd like to determine what it is that Pine is
trying to do that triggered this message.

Oops. That should be ;/a/t/a (ok really ;ata). Sorry.

Subsequent followup with the user has determined that openmail's IMAP
server (or at least that installation of the server) does not accept
US-ASCII as a CHARSET in SEARCH. This is a violation of RFC 2060 section
6.4.4 page 38. This is therefore a problem in openmail's IMAP server and
not in Pine.
Does anyone know if a newer version of openmail has fixed this problem?
