I have precious (very precious) little idea where up is.

> Thank you! Now can you do the same thing using 'pine' running on
> your local system.
Well, there are four of them, remember -- and even when two or more have
a folder with the same name, its contents will vary. There are also a few
directories on different machines with names like Oldpine or pine.Old for
whatever I've saved before upgrading an operating system in one place or
another -- though that isn't really a pine question, and I imagine it
would make most sense to disregard it here.
I suggest I send you four more replies to this message, one from each. And
before I do, does it matter whether titan pine, or its folder Adel-inbox,
is open when I access my inbox directly?
(I'm doing all I can at the moment through ssh into titan, and then
invoking pine, rather than using the alias from here, which still sees an
odd admixture of stuff, btw. I hope that's right.)
Yes, I remember that there are 4 pine aliases on your local
system, but what I want you to do is run the 'pine' alias on your
local system and then type MSL and then copy & paste what you see
into a reply to this message. At the moment, I only care about
the alias that is called 'pine' -- that's what I mean when I put
'pine' in quotes. I mean for you to type exactly this
pine
The other aliases are for emergency situations when the 'pine'
alias does not work. In general, you will always use the 'pine'
alias on your local system and that is the one we need to get
working.
If I want you to type one of the other pine aliases, I will
explicitly ask you to do that.
I hope this makes sense.

No, it does not matter. This is one of the nice things about
using a TCP/IP protocol to access a mailbox.

Oh! I didn't happen to be on the machine that has the alias, and didn't
think of that. I am now. After the command, I got

Yes, it does now. I'm betting that those folders in that last screen have
different (i.e., adelphia) content than the ones really on titan, btw,
even when they have the same names.

Remember I have little idea what I am talking about.
I just realized that when you said "four of them," you might mean
your 4 local systems. Please set up all of your local systems so
that they all have the same pine aliases, especially the 'pine'
alias, i.e., the one that looks like this:
/path/to/pine -p "{titan.lserv.com/novalidate-cert/user=karhunhammas}remote_pinerc"
Remember that this is all on one line and you need to replace
'/path/to/pine' with the correct path to pine on that system.
Instructions for setting up bash aliases are in older messages.
Thank you,
Nancy

Actually, I forgot : it's five; but the laptop is so seldom used, except
for guests (with a guest logon id and no access to any of my email) that
we can ignore it.

Even though, as you can see from the folder lists, that alias gets neither
titan's folder list nor the proper content of the folders it does list --
and none at all of titan's inbox? (Iow, if I understand aright, the alias
is certain sure good, but somehow accessing a bad .pinerc?) I'm getting
*very* confused.
> Remember that this is all on one line and you need to replace

If you really say so, yes, I can find the instructions again. I *think* I
can also scp a .pinerc from any machine to any other, including titan.
(The laptop, being an Apple, may be different for aught I know, since it
runs FC5.ppc instead of plain FC5; but I'm already proposing to ignore
that unless it's way easy.)
1] Type MSLA to go to Main > Setup > collectionList > Add
2] On the FOLDER COLLECTION ADD screen, specify the following:
Nickname : titan.lserv.com IMAP
Server : titan.lserv.com/novalidate-cert/user=karhunhammas
Path :
View :
3] Type ^X to save and exit. Answer Yes to any save questions.
4] Quit and restart pine on titan.
5] Type ML to go to Main > folder List
6] Go into the 'titan.lserv.com IMAP' collection and check that
you can open a folder in there.
7] Quit pine on titan.
8] On your *local system*, run the 'pine' *alias* (the 'pine'
alias should now be the same on all your local systems)
9] Type ML to go to Main > folder List
10] Go into the 'titan.lserv.com IMAP' collection and check that
you can open a folder in there.
Let us know what happens.
There is still clean up that needs to be done so do not despair
if you are unhappy with the current set up.
Good luck,
Nancy
I know you are confused -- that is why I said earlier that you
have some fundamental misunderstandings. But, YES, you need to
set up these pine aliases on all your local systems. The easiest
way is to copy the bash file that you use to set the aliases.
Before you replicate your bash files, please copy & paste the
following two files from the *local system* that has the working
pine aliases.
~/.bashrc
~/.bash_profile
This will let me know what exactly your aliases are and how they
are specified.
Thank you,
Nancy
> OK, now I know what's going on. I want you to do the following on
> 'pine' running *on titan*.
That means on the machine with the alias, and using it, iiuc; so that's
what all the following will be.
> 1] Type MSLA to go to Main > Setup > collectionList > Add

Done, again using the alias.

Done.

Yes; I opened several, and they appear at first glance to be like the ones
I get to with ssh; but I think there are some not there ...
> 7] Quit pine on titan.
Done.
> 8] On your *local system*, run the 'pine' *alias*
Well, I guess I got it backward -- but I don't *think* anything is ruined.
Having just done all the above under the alias, I did it now under ssh --
and things appeared to be the same in the folder-collection <Mail> and the
folder-collection <titan.lserv.com IMAP> -- except for some dummies listed
as 1 Apr 21 Mail System Inter (638) DON'T DELETE THIS MESSAGE --
FOLDE
> (the 'pine' alias should now be the same on all your local systems)
I haven't done that yet. It will take a while -- and I have a couple
things that have to be done today. It may be tomorrow before I can report
having it all done. Question : can I use the easy way instead, and just do
scp from the .bashrc with the aliases to the other machines? If I can
spare all the finding and copying, etc., that will go a lot quicker and
more surely, though it may still be tomorrow before I can report on it.
> 9] Type ML to go to Main > folder List
>
> 10] Go into the 'titan.lserv.com IMAP' collection and check that

Yes, both under the alias and under ssh.
> Let us know what happens.
>
> There is still clean up that needs to be done so do not despair
> if you are unhappy with the current set up.
The only thing that really bothers me is that my ignorant autodidact's
errors must be causing you a lot more work than you meant to let yourself
in for. So long as you're still in my corner, I have no doubt of the
ultimate outcome. I've been reading your posts here on c.m.p for a lot of
years -- verbum sap.
I hope I'm not misinterpreting the tilde. From my userid home directory :
[btth@localhost ~]$ cat .bashrc
# .bashrc
# Source global definitions
if [ -f /etc/bashrc ]; then
. /etc/bashrc
fi
# User specific aliases and functions
alias Adelpine='/usr/bin/pine'
alias delpine='/usr/bin/pine'
alias pine='/usr/bin/pine -p "{titan.lserv.com/novalidate-cert/user=karhunhammas}remote_pinerc"'
[btth@localhost ~]$ cat .bash_profile
# .bash_profile
# Get the aliases and functions
if [ -f ~/.bashrc ]; then
. ~/.bashrc
fi
# User specific environment and startup programs
PATH=$PATH:$HOME/bin
export PATH
unset USERNAME
alias Adelpine='/usr/bin/pine'
alias delpine='/usr/bin/pine'
alias pine='/usr/bin/pine -p
"{titan.lserv.com/novalidate-cert/user=karhunhammas}remote_pinerc"'
[btth@localhost ~]$
One more thing; I just checked, and under the alias there's still no
access to my incoming stuff : no inbox in the titan IMAP folder
collection, and an INBOX claimed empty.
1] Password file (PASSFILE) details -- we may end up specifying
the passfile in the aliases
2] Make sure you actually want to use this system once we get it
all set up.
3] Decide on all the pine aliases that you need.
So, for now, I'm holding off on the alias propagation and
focusing on getting 'pine' working on titan and on the one local
system where you have the 'pine' alias.
I hope you agree with this plan!
Nancy
Fine by me.
I have tried to answer your last few messages (and a helpful one from
EduardoC) in what I hope was the order posted. So I also need to know what
a passfile is.
I can keep at this a while longer today -- but it must be pushing
dinnertime in London. And we've gotten what to me at least seems a
huge mass of work done for one session already. Want to call it a day?
