Reducing startup time lags due to read-only setting

Hi

I use (al)pine on a non-networked laptop to access archived email
files. These archived files are read-only. Also the hostname for
my laptop (D630) is considered an "incomplete maildomain" .
Both of these factors result in long lags when I start up pine. In
particular, it takes a while before I can sort the file, Is
there a way to reduce these lags? There was one ancient post which
seems to this subject (1994) but I'm afraid I'm too much of a noob to
implement it.
