remote pinerc and 'Can't modify configuration file'

I've been using remote config files for a long time without any
problems. Today I'm experimenting with using the same remote
config file for multiple instances of pine on multiple systems
(e.g., pine running in remote ssh windows). I just got these
messages in my Pine Journal:

Message size does not match expected size, continuing... [not
actually shown]
Formatting error: Partial fetch failed!: Error copying remote
IMAP data
Formatting error: Transfer interrupted!: Error copying remote
IMAP data
Can't modify configuration file "{hidden.by.nancy}pinercex"

What is the best way to prevent this type of problem? I'm
guessing that one issue might be that at the moment the remote
configs are in mbox-formatted mailboxes and that if I change them
to c-client MBX format, the problem will go away.

Please let me know if you have any suggestions for avoiding this
problem.
