Alpine 2.0 evidently won't allow the use of the mouse to highlight an
area for copying; there is a "copy" in the dropdown but no selection
to mark the area/zone for copying.
Copy & paste is a basic need as when the vendor say that an item is
shipped, & the tracking-id is provided, I used to highlight the
track-id & paste it onto the ups website to get the shipping details
of the said item.
Did I miss a config somewhere? The highlighting does work outside of
alpine....

I'm not using alpine (yet, anyway), so I can't speak directly to this.
However, I have noticed this sort of odd behavior on other apps running
in X, such as the links text browser.
My workaround is to hold down the "shift" key and do the X cut/paste as
usual. I know it's clumsy, and I don't understand why, but it works.
HTH; YMMV...

Works for me: I just have to press the shift key while selecting and then
middle-click to copy/paste (or right mouse button to get context menu).
Does copying and pasting work in your terminal program (not running
alpine)? What terminal program do you use?
Erik
I'm using just the defaulted kde 4 xterm console & it does do the highlight
by just moving the pointer; usually I'm doing mail & news on bootup in
runlevel 3 console mode. It's only when I have an urge to check on the
movement of the item ordered as to how soon it actually will arrive.
Thanks for your & another's tip on holding down the shift key to select
what I want; never had to do that before & don't understand why the
change where selecting isn't allowed in alpine the way it was in pine....
Just a followup: using the pointer to highlite an area ("regular"
copy & paste) works in slrn in the same xterm console session. Will
have to remember about the shift-key in alpine as it is no longer
being "supported"/fixed.
Not sure, but if alpine has support for gpm, it could be what causes this.

That's what I see with links (text browser), too. Everything else is very
happy with "normal" cut&paste in X (specifically any xterm session except
one running links).
I haven't tried alpine yet, so this is helpful for me to know beforehand.
(FWIW, the common denominator seems to be some CLI apps running in xterm)

I vaguely recall years ago seeing similar X "quirks" at times, using apps
with other *nix (Sun, SGI, etc.). But I'm too lazy to run them down, when
I can workaround a few apps like links and alpine with a little practice.
It is possible that your problem is caused by the fact that you have
enabled mouse support in Alpine. If this is your case, then the normal
operations of cut and paste require you to press the SHIFT key while
you perform them, that is SHIFT+click is your friend.
Disabling the "enable mouse in xterm" got the cut&paste to work!!
Don't remember if it was a default BUT the wording is strange;
however, the "regular" cursor appears instead of the pointer.
Finally read the help for alpine mouse; guess it is a choice
whether to use the mouse to select the url or the "old-fashioned"
way....
Thanks, I will leave the mouse disabled.
Thanks too, I had the same problem. I use Xming over XP and disabling the
mouse helped me to paste in Alpine a text formerly cut in Windows. That's
fine so far. However, how can I cut text in Alpine to paste in Windows?
In windows, the "command prompt" is like a dos box.
Click on the icon at the left corner & select edit; then click the icon again
& select "mark"; use the mouse(?), probably the cursor to mark the block of
text; then click the icon again & select copy.
Think that there used to be separate selections for "begin mark/block" &
"end mark/block".
It's been a while that I've used windows but the cut & paste between
dos windows is done about the same as above; you might have to do a bit
of trial & error but the idea is that copy & paste is done via selecting
the icon first to define the block via the icon as there isn't a menu bar
& I don't remember the shortcut key for marking the block.

Thank you. If I could cut or copy a text in alpine, I would find may way
to paste it in Windows. My problem is that I can not select my text to be
copied in alpine.
I think I misread your situation in that I have no idea what "Xming over XP"
is doing or rather don't know what Xming is.
The alpine 2.00 binaries don't have the "enable xterm mouse" & alpine just
work like any windows app in that the one can copy & paste like any windows
app.
I had rebooted into winxp & used alpine like a win app; was able to mark
the block & copied it into editpadlite.
Perhaps the difference is in using the setup alpine versus the compressed
file for self-install? Or that an alpine icon is allowed to be installed
onto the desktop?
Oh no, I am so sorry, I was not specific enough.
I am using an X Server that is called Xming and is functioning fine on my
XP. I am logging in at my home Linux and run alpine on my XP laptop in an
xterm window. Actually I have Xming with me on a pendrive therefore I can
also use my home environment and open an xterm console on almost any
computer with internet connection.
So, I have XP, an X Server, running xterm and alpine in xterm. I can not
copy any text in alpine. I can copy any text in any window on my xp and I
can also paste in alpine with the middle button if mouse is not enabled
in alpine. But in reverse order, from alpine to windows I can not find my
way copying a text.
Never got into that type of usage of the os (perhaps like cygn?); however,
in linux xterm with the mouse disabled, I can still use the mouse to map out
the block that I want to copy then press both mouse buttons to copy when
in a xterm window(?); it may work in your case.
It behaves just like using console mode (no X) where I mark the block & press
only the left mouse button to do the copying.
