I know this is a known problem. GMail is my IMAP server (yes, I know it's
non-compliant). I am attempting to save messages to my local drive and
when I do I get "message to save shrank".

I did a little searching. I found a workaround here:
http://www.ii.com/internet/messaging/pine/pc/ but it doesn't work.

I do understand this is an issue on Google's end and not with Alpine. Has
anyone else found a workaround that does work? Would using POP3 instead
work better? I know I can use fetchmail, but there's only a specific
folder/tag I want to save locally.

Alpine 2.00 (OSX 1167 2008-08-23) built Wed Sep 24 22:26:04 CDT 2008 on
Macintosh.local

In some forum found using Google, someone "patched" its pine by commenting
part of the code and recompiling. But it's dicey since pine won't check
message sizes anymore!

Probably worth a try!

The changelog here
http://www.washington.edu/alpine/changes/1.00-to-1.10.html says you should
be offered to save anyway. Is that wrong or inconvenient to you?

I'm offered to save, but it doesn't save.

When I have time I'll try POP3 and report back.
