FM's servers are listed here:
<http://www.fastmail.fm/docs/faqparts/ExternalMail.htm#ServerDetails>
To set up Pine to use FM, you need to do three things:
1] Add your FM INBOX to your Pine incoming-folders list.
2] Add your FM folders to your Pine folder-collections list.
3] Add an FM role to your Pine roles.
Before we begin, two important notes for Beartooth:
** Use Pine running on titan to do this.
** Do NOT follow FM's Pine instructions.
(they will not work with your remote pinerc)
1] Start Pine, type L to go to your FOLDER LIST, use arrow keys
to move the focus to the incoming-folders INBOX, and type A (for
Add).
At the 'Name of server to contain added folder' prompt paste
this:
mail.messagingengine.com/ssl/novalidate-cert/user=beartooth!mailworksDOTorg
(and then replace '!' with '@' and 'DOT' with '.')
At the 'Folder on...' prompt, type this:
INBOX
At the Nickname prompt, type this:
FM-inbox
(or whatever you like, e.g., mailworks.org-inbox)
Let us know if this works, i.e., if you are able to access your
FM inbox after doing this.
I'll write Step 2 and 3 in separate messages (not necessarily
today!)
Good luck,
Nancy

Haven't made any yet.

Unconfident as I am with roles, I'll hold off on that.

I did it under ssh into titan.

I hadn't even found them yet. (Excuse : dentist <sigh>)

Done. Including the change of characters, once each. (I'm curious about
that /ssl/ in there.)

OK; I went with what you say.

It works; and I went ahead and added an archiving folder for it among the
other incoming folders under M > S > C.
Btw, don't let me forget that one of the things to clean up eventually is
that novalug and novalug-old are shown among my incoming folders; but
their duplicates among regular folders are the ones that work.

I'll be here, and watching for it.

A. Start Pine and type MSLA (Main > Setup > collectionList > Add)
and fill in the form like this:
Nickname : FM
Server : mail.messagingengine.com/ssl/novalidate-cert/user=beartooth@m...
Path :
View :
Replace the '...' with the rest of your FM email address. Pine
will automatically fetch the correct Path from the FM IMAP
server. Do not fill it out by hand -- let Pine do it.
B] Type ^X to save this.
C] Use $ (Shuffle) to move this FM collection to the top of your
collection list.
During this transition, I think it is best to have the FM
collection at the top of your collection list. After things are
all set up, you can move it wherever you like.
Good luck!

Done. It created a third folder collection.

Done -- sort of; see below your sig.

You mean it does make some difference which collection is where? Again,
see below your sig.
Fwiw, I've been sticking to the folders in the titan collection so far --
routinely to check my spam folder (Ddave does something Bayesian, among
other things; I have a blacklist, a whitelist, and the spam folder for
dubious cases -- what I delete adds to scores against; and I generally
save false positives to the INBOX.) and to check novalug, which is my main
source of gurux not only for linux but for computer questions generally.
I've also been using only the titan collection for getting into other
folders, particularly the archived ones, at need.)
> Good luck!
> Let us know how it goes,
> Nancy
Very odd. I had FM first; exited adding; and M > L showed me three
collections, all right -- but with FM in the middle instead of first. (It
also says "[No Folders in Collection]") Shall I try shuffling again, or is
it refusing to put anything but titan first, or ...?
Incidentally, that reminds me of two points I don't have straight.
One: do I have to set FM up to use addresses like
"news(at)beartooth.mailworks.org" -- or is that automatic? (Does FM create
folders and sort into them by incoming address, or do I?)
Two: does FM include a newsfeed? Or will I leave my reader set to
adelphia? I ask because I tried munging the address in the posting
profile, and it simply refused to post -- I *think* because of giganews's
authentication. (Adelphia subcontracts its newsfeed to giganews.) I'm
still pursuing that on Gmane's pan.user list, but I *think* all it will
let me do is put a spamtrap note in my sig file.
Btw : I have good news, if it pans out. The nearest wireless broadband
provider (which has been expanding) says I can get a connection from them.
So Adelphia may become an abomination of the past -- and with just the
right timing, shortly after we have titan and FM working together. Keep
your fingers crossed!
I did M > L ; again, it came up in the FM collection, not the titan
collection, even though titan's incoming collection is displayed on top,
with FM's between that and FM's collection. I moved the cursor to my
titan INBOX, hit enter, and was at the bottom of it. I hit the tab key
again. And again, all it did was display "[No more new messages in
folder]" -- even though some of the other incoming folders on titan do
have new messages.
I don't yet see my PS, which described tabbing problems after adding the
FM collection; this is an addition to it.
I went into one of the other incoming folders on titan -- not the INBOX --
got to the bottom of it, hit N, and it told me, as usual, that there were
no more messages, suggesting the tab. So I hit the tab -- and sure enough,
it offered me the next incoming folder with something to see. I told it
yes; it did the usual deleting, and went there; I went to the bottom of
the new folder, hit tab again, and it offered the INBOX -- and went there
when I assented.
So I went to the bottom of the INBOX, ignoring new stuff, and hit tab
again. This time it worked.
Beartooth, please do the following on pine running on titan.
1] quit and restart pine.
2] type 'L' to go to the FOLDER LIST.
3] copy & paste what you see into a followup to this message.
Thanks,
After the reshuffle, which I just posted into an allied thread, I see

I just tried sending a message from lserv to my FM account. Since the tab
isn't going from incoming folder to incoming folder at present (though it
was a few moments ago), I got into FM-inbox from the main list -- and the
test message was there.
Step 3]
A. Start Pine on titan and type MSRRA (Main > Setup > Rules >
Roles > Add). On this screen, I want you to fill in only 3
fields. After we get this working, you may want to edit some of
the other fields, but for now, please edit only:
Nickname
Set From
Set SMTP Server
Leave all other fields as they are.
Below is what I recommend. In all 3 of these fields, replace
'm...' with 'mailworks.org':
PINE 4.64 ADD A ROLE RULE
Nickname = beartooth@m...
[ ...many lines cut...]
==========ACTIONS BEGIN HERE ===========================================
Initialize settings using role :
Set From = Beartooth <beartooth@m...>
Set Reply-To =
Set Fcc =
Set LiteralSig =
Set Signature =
Set Template =
Set Other Hdrs =
Use SMTP Server = mail.messagingengine.com/submit/novalidate-cert/user=beartooth@m...
Use NNTP Server =
B) Save the role and exit the roles configuration screens.
C) Quit Pine.
D) Restart Pine and send a message using this role to me (use my
agorae@ address).
Good luck -- if this works, we're getting close to a usable
system!

Oh good. Still no reply from Ddave, though ...
Yes, it does matter. This is one of the "interesting" UI
decisions that the Pine Team made. Now that you have set the
Path in the FM collection to 'INBOX.', it should work and I
recommend that you use $ (Shuffle) to move it to the top of your
folder-collections list.
All will become clear soon (I hope).

I did that -- and it's back to displaying second of the collection lists,
between titan's incoming and titan's ordinary. It also now has three
folders in it :
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Folder-Collection <Incoming-Folders>

Folder-Collection <titan.lserv.com IMAP>

Is that right?? Or should I try shuffling again, or something? (Btw, the
sent folder does have three I had sent from there.}

To which I replied inter alia :

Well, it *did* have three. Then I dealt with two new messages -- and pine
created the file folders in FM! instead of finding them among titan's
ordinary ones.
> All will become clear soon (I hope).

Yes, that's right. To make the FM folder names more readable, I
recommend that you go to MSC (Main > Setup > Config) and set
this:
[X] quell-empty-directories
Setting this feature will get rid of the '[.]' in FM folder
names.
More soon,

Double urkkk -- it just made two more. It seems to be doubling all the
archives ....

Is it just me, or do others wonder why this Beartooth/Nancy saga
can't be better done by email?

For the record, several people have, in one way or another -- which seems
to me to indicate they were following it -- and this is the first
complaint, in something over three months. Doesn't that suggest the
complainer is odd man out?
But, be that as it may, I follow my guru -- with apologies to any who are
indeed still following.
