Hi all,

some mail frontends don't declare umlaut characters in the subject
header, e.g. microsoft outlook. Alpine (Linux) then displays a question
mark. Can alpine be set up to display those characters?

Really? Or do you confuse Outlook and Outlook Express?

Outlook Express can (and should!) be set up correctly; see
