I'm trying to set a rule to copy incoming items to a folder and mark
unread items in the folder.

1. Is there a way of including 'copy' as an option in the rule (at
the moment I can select 'move' but 'copy' is not an option)?

2. In the folder list is there a way of showing the number of new
messages (i.e. <somefoldername>(4) for 4 new messages in that
folder)? My current rule moves new messages into a folder but I have
no way of seeing if indeed there are new messages there without
opening the folder.

This option does not exist in Pine <= 4.64. Any equivalent workarounds ?
And which version onwards has this feature ?

This seems to cover earlier versions:
http://staff.washington.edu/chappa/alpine/info/incoming.html

And in alpine 2.0 I had to be careful with the definition of the
incoming folder (INBOX.foldername , not just 'foldername').

I'm pretty sure there's a practically equivalent option with a different
name. I've always used it with Pine, or was it automatic when one uses
incoming folders? (I've just looked in my old system's backup .pinerc
but can't figure out which option does this. Maybe does it come with
enable-check-incoming-folders?)

I belive it is automatic on using incoming folders. The key is
[]enable-fast-recent-test feature. When enabled it only checks for
existence of new messages rather than counting the new messages. The help
for this option says that :

When the TAB (Next New) key is pressed, the default behavior is to
explicitly examine the status of the folder for the number of recent
messages (messages delivered since the last time it was viewed).
