Does the "Show Pictures" function in HTML mail doesn't appear to be working for
me in 4.51 or am I missing something?

Try setting Tools | Options | Advanced settings => "Load Windows Internet
Services ..." to "Always" and restart Pegasus Mail.

I have it set to "On demand only" and when I right click and select
"Show pictures (HTML only)" it still doesn't show them.

Went back to 4.51 and it works just fine. This is clearly a bug!

"Show pictures (HTML only)" it still doesn't show them.

Went back to 4.41 and it works just fine. This is clearly a bug!

It not clear to me, as it works just as advertised for me. I sent
myself an HTML-formatted email with an embedded picture, and when I
choose "Show Pictures (HTML only)" from the right-click context menu,
there is is.

No it's not, it's by design: Previous versions were more likely to crash
because of the previous implementation. And you need to set it to "Always",
exactly as I wrote (that's why I actually did!), not to "On demand only" as
this will only work just as long as you don't do a single POP3 or SMTP
action for retrieving/sending your mail.

So how do I do if I don't want to load images for messages that are
spam (but want to open the message to check if it's really spam)? Or
commercial messages, where I'm not interested in the particular
product they're advertising, but want to continue receiving messages
from the sender?

And why is the "On demand only" option still there if it doesn't work
after the first POP3/SMTPO operation? If it doesn't do what it says it
does, why leave it there at all, just to confuse users?

commercial messages, where I'm not interested in the particular

Loading images for every message slows down loading messages, and may
tell the sender (spammer) that I've opened his message (if he uses
unique links for each recipient's images).

If the previous implementation of "On demand only" was flawed and
crashed a lot, why not corretc the flaw and preserve this useful
feature, instead of leaving a "dead" feature that doesn't work after
the first POP3/SMTP operation?

If it no longer does what it says it does, why leave it there at all,
just to confuse users?

Well, lets take a look at "what it says it does": Does "Load Windows
Internet Services ..." sound to you like "Load remote images from web ..."?
Not exactly, I guess. "Load Windows Internet Services ..." does exactly what
it says: It loads WSOCK32.DLL which is required for *all* Internet access
via Pegasus Mail no matter whether sending or retrieving message or images
or anything else.

What you are talking about is the option "Display remote-linked graphics in
messages ..." on Tools | Options | Message reader - which isn't even close
to the above - but retrieving images requires WSOCK32.DLL to be loaded, and
for reasons that depend on Microsoft's library linking there's a problem
with loading it on demand that can't easily be solved (according to David
Harris).

I've had the "Load on demand" option enabled for years. I never know it
was depricated, and I never had a problem with it. I just changed it to
the recommended setting now, though.

It's only a problem whenever any other (embedded) software tries to access
the Internet from within Pegasus Mail: BearHtml or HtmlHelp or my extensions
etc.

I'm still very surprised I never ran into any problem. I'm sure the
above scenario must have occurred at least a few times in the past many
years.

If you never try retrieving remote images after doing a POP3 download you
will never notice.

You are absolutely right: I was under the (wrong) impression that the
"Always" option implied always downloading remote images, which it
doesn't. Thanks for making it clear to me!
