every fscking 20 seconds? how often do you get new mail?
are you able to be ready every 20 secs to deal with new mail?

there should be code to deny updates beyond 60 secs.

maybe the imap sever is too busy with the update requests
that it cannot send out any confirmations? (wild guess)
