Folder list - mails in square brackets

Hi folks,
sometimes by mistake I press God knows what key and in my folder
list, besides the mailbox name and the quantity of mails I have,
appears a number (I presume it indicates a given mail) surrounded by
square brackets. It bothers me because I tend to confuse it with new
mails (which appear between parentheses) and I don't know how to make
it go away.
Can you guys tell me what it means and how can I deactivate it?

Ok, I happen to find the answer: I flagged a message by mistake.
Removing the flag, removed the mark in the folder list.
