I tried to google for this question (and I found the mutt FAQ) but
I was unable to find an answer.
I would like to customize the way messages are listed in a folder,
in particular, the way the Date is shown. For instance, one of my
folders has:
5 O Oct 02 News system (2,4K) news suck aioe.org
7 O Oct 02 News system (6,9K) news suck aioe.org
9 O Oct 01 News system (2,7K) news suck aioe.org
As you can see, only the month and day are shown. Neither the hour:minute
nor the year are show. Currently I am using a 135-column wide xterm, so
I would have space to show the full date. IIRC, other mail clients behave
differently depending if a message is recent (show only the hour:minute)
or old (show the date, but not the hour:minute).
I was expecting mutt to be configurable (maybe a format string
like many programs use) but I could not find such an option.
I suppose it can't be done ?
Another thing: I noticed that there are ways to use colours in the mutt
display (I found some examples of things like showing the messages from
a particular address in a different colour). But it seems that there is
not a default colour mode (say: show the messages in different colours,
depending on its flags (N, O, etc.)). Correct ?
Thanks in advance.

man muttrc
See the sections on index_format and date_format.
You won't be able to have different settings by age though.

Thanks, that was I was looking for.
Sure you can. The trick is to use a script. See MID

anyhow.

Hello Christian,
thank you for sharing this script. I adapted it to my needs and it works
like a charm.
Thx Michael
