How Much Is A GigaByte In Terms Of eMail Activity?
  ... ... The answer depends on your usage habits. Do you send and receive short plain-text email messages only? Messages similar to this Netnews article are typically a couple of kilobytes long. You would need hundreds of thousands of such messages to fill a gigabyte. If your typical email message includes file attachments, that changes... more »

HOW2 send postponed mailS & halt imap?
  ... ... IMO `pine` is badly designed. Imagine that you need to walk 2 hours to the postbox. And then you join a queue of 200 posters. When you finally get to post, you'll:- * want to have brought sufficient mails to justify the cost; * no time to start editing while 200 people are waiting behind you!... more »

finding out whether a server has TLS, whether it uses a dnsbl, etc
  Is there a website or other service that keeps a record of attributes of various mail servers? Or an app, perhaps? I find that telneting to 25 from a script is a bit of a tedious hack.

Emacs (Gnus), mail, news, and multiple encodings
  ... [Well, cross-posting to news:news.software.readers and news:comp.mail.misc. Perhaps news:gnu.emacs.gnus might have been a better choice, but I'm somewhat cautious as to cross-post to a Mailman-backed newsgroup.] >> Frankly, I can't readily recall of /any/ text editor that would >> allow for multiple encodings for a single file. Could you please... more »

gmail: doesn't imap keep the directory?
  Finally I found the instructions to imap & smtp gmail, with the required ssl. It uses alpine. But I can't see how to send a set of 'postponed' mails that I've prepared, once I go on-line. It shows only forward & reply. The imap facility took long to d/l the gmail-dir of about 70 mails. Now that I've gone off-line, the directory is not visible.... more »

using postfix over tor
  Ideally, when a mail server sends a message, it takes the most secure path first, and then downgrades the security as needed until the message is sent. This means it should make attempts in this order: 1) Create a list of tor exit nodes that do not block port 25 2) Command the tor daemon to exit those nodes exclusively.... more »

what do you do when....
  <rant> .... your ISP has recently set up its mail server to drop non-delivery reports on outgoing mail (so you never know you've typed a recipient address wrongly); blocks port 25 except to their own server (so you can't send directly); and doesn't put in a reverse DNS entry (so other mail servers won't allow access)?... more »
