element, not for storing mails:

Whatever your platform requires to support SSL. If I recall, you're using
Windows. Try asking in an appropriate microsoft.* newsgroup. This no longer
has anything to do with IMAP.

You can't connect to the Googlemail IMAP server without SSL.
As Joel wrote, as long as the server doesn't greet you with an untagged
OK response, you've not successfully connected to it.
After connection, it might be necessary to send the CAPABILITY command
first, I'm not sure about this.

Are you sure? Are you receiving a greeting from the server something
like
* OK Gimap ready for requests from xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx xxxxxxxxxxxxx.x
?
If not, you may have neglected to initiate an SSL connection.

i using vb 6 to write an email client with imap.
i try to connect "imap.gmail.com" with port 993
and its connect successfully.
but now,what i need to send to the server in order to login my user?
i try to send :
1 login myusername mypassword
but its not work,the server dont return anything.

Some IMAP servers will automatically create the necessary parent folders.
Other servers will refuse to do so.
If you intend to have your client work with all IMAP servers, you must be
prepared to handle all possibilities.

I haven't found any server yet that wouldn't automatically create the
parents. But if you want to be really safe, you can always do:
1 create parent/
2 create parent/child/
3 create parent/child/target
(/ being the correct hierarchy separator)
