Lost 2 years of email

Your in.toc got corrupted?

Having all your email in the inbox is not good technique. Just google it.
Before doing anything, shut down eudora and make copies of everything in.*.
Depending on your version of Eudora there may be backup copies like
in.mbx.001 etc.

Save the copies somewhere safe.
Save another set of copies in a different place.
Remember, backups are your friends (repeat 3 times aloud!).

Now delete the in.toc file and restart Eudora, and let her rebuild the
inbox. Maybe there is stuff there that you missed.

Also, the inbox is really a text file that other programs like Notepad or
Wordpad can read. (Use copies for this!) What does that show??

o You never backed up your mail folder (by zipping it, say).

o You didn't move old mail to another (user-created) mailbox,
to keep number of messages for "In" small, to guard against its
always memory-resident "Table of contents" getting corrupted
(the same caution applies to "Out," by the way).

Per page 147 of latest Eudora manual:
"TIP: Try not to keep too many messages
in your In, Out, or Trash mailboxes
because it slows down your system's performance.
If you wish to keep these messages,
it's better to transfer them to other mailboxes."

But all may not be lost, because Eudora automatically
makes backups of "In" and "Out," just before compacting them
(this could still be very infrequent, so it's much better
that you also make your own backups, or else force these
mailboxes to be compacted, to make Eudora save a backup):

Don't use Eudora again until you first read the above!

Hope that you find as much of your old mail as possible,
then follow new practices to ensure safekeeping in the future.

I can't find any in.* files. I even tried a search of the entire computer.

C:\Documents and Settings\<yourLogOnName>\Application Data\Qualcomm\Eudora
is the XP default..
The directory may be hidden. Fix that :)
in Explorer: Tools | Folder Options | View "Show Hidden..." /Apply/

While running Eudora:

"Help" | "About Eudora"

Click on the "Data" path -- that's your top-level mail folder,
and contains everything: mailboxes, settings, address books, etc.

Wonder if this is also true for OE slowing down computer? Talking to a
friend that uses it and he was complaining about computer email slowing
down. Said he saved everything in in box.

Can you find any *.toc files in the directory? You may have to
"show hidden files".

Check your recycle bin - it's a hope. After that, you're stuck
with some kind of file fragment sniffer.

Now is the time to _implement_ the back up plans. (I just had a
similar 'learning' experience' occur to me too)

If their suggestions don't work, search the whole computer for in.*
or *.toc or *.mbx .
