I do not want ot orphan any real links from any either Imap or local
mail folders, but how should/could I do some cleanup?
Shouldn't Eudora delete Embedded images when an EMail is deleted??
You may need to choose compact mailboxes from the special menu.

Things like this have to be done very carefully. For example, my
filters make a copy of most of my incoming email into an archive
folder. When I'm through processing the email, I delete the copy that's
in my inbox. Eventually it gets deleted from the trash. Yet I still
have a copy. Clearly the criterion has to be, not "the message is
deleted" or "the message is emptied from the trash", but "no more
copies of the message exist".
I even archive my junk mail, though separately -- mostly for
statistics, although a couple of times I've rescued, weeks later, good
email that I missed in my first scan through the junk mailbox. However,
in this case I would like to delete all the embedded images for the
archived junk. That's difficult too.

That is indeed very important, yet with options such as
"delete from server when emptied from trash" and
"delete attachments when emptying trash,"
if *any* copy of a message is trashed
(or even if a *partially* downloaded copy that was truncated
by the option "skip messages over [ ]K in size" is trashed),
then the corresponding server message or locally stored attachment
is deleted anyway, even if other copies of the same message
exist within the Eudora mail folder,
basically because Eudora apparently can't identify what messages
are really associated with the same original source message,
or else doesn't want to take the time which could be required
to determine that.
I don't know whether the "delete attachments when emptying trash"
option applies to embedded images as well, but if it does,
then it would be subject to the very same pitfall,
so you should bear all of this in mind
when setting each of the above options.
The IMAP behavior might possibly also differ from the POP behavior,
complicated by the fact that there may be both remote and local
mailbox files (guthrie always uses IMAP, while I always use POP).
"Brana" recently posted a new URL to his collection of Eudora plugins,
one of which scans all mailboxes, looking for duplicate storage
of the same original message (for eliminating all but one of each,
even though there might be reason to sometimes put a copy of one
message in two or more places); it's conceivable that there might
be interest in a plugin for the removal of all embedded images
*and* attachments which are no longer referenced by any messages
(or has this already been done?) Perhaps very many $14 sales
could be generated if there's a lot of interest in this :)

Hello there:
Delete Duplicates for Eudora provides Scan Special Folders: To use it just
select Embedded Files folder (just below mailboxes panel), and hit Scan
Embedded Files. It shouldn't take very long for embedded files are usually
small in size.
When I changed the host I updated the site a little bit. Plugins page is
not 100% done yet, but all the plugins are listed.
You can now download Delete Duplicates for Eudora from here:

The issue in this thread is to remove *unreferenced* items
(embedded and/or attachments), rather than only *duplicates*;
does your existing plugin have such an option?
Thanks for your input.

Ah ok, I didn't pick up that.
For orphaned attachments check out the Attacher plugin. To start the
program click Tools/Orphaned Attachments. Note, that scan is very slow.
Which mailbox is currently scanned is displayed on Eudora-status bar.
Note also, it's not for embedded files, it's just for attachments.

If you happen to find it easy to extend this to embedded images,
I guess that there's someone who would appreciate it :)
Thanks again for the very useful info (and plugins).
