Several times recently, when I open my Eudora mail box (by
double-clicking on a link to the Settings file that's in my Dock,
thereby starting Eudora in the process), what looks like a message
**except it has no headers at all, and a lot of "broken-link" icons**
opens in front of all my other new messages. The opening readable words
(in larger red type) are:

=============================================
Download Eudora

The latest versions of Eudora are shown below. To find out if you are
running the latest version, open Eudora and select Help > About Eudora
(Mac OS X, go to the Eudora: menu > About Eudora).

Eudora for
Windows Eudora for
Mac OS X
=============================================

What's this? Where might it come from?

(This is on a MacBook running 10.4.11 and original Eudora 6.2.4)

It's a Eudora Mac mail list. Someone on that list can probably answer...

Is this not just a normal pop-up window,
except for its poor HTML rendering?

Here's exactly what you are seeing (except for its formatting):
http://www.eudora.com/download/

I believe that it is the result of Eudora doing its periodic check
to see whether there are any new versions available from Qualcomm.

Formerly, this action was performed by a server web page
that was "jumped to" by Eudora (and the server),
which compared a parameter sent by Eudora in its URL,
identifying the version of Eudora it was coming from,
as well as the type and month of any existing registration.

I suspect that Qualcomm has just recently eliminated the server page
which was doing that, having it "jump" instead
to the common Eudora site "download" page for everyone,
causing the latter page to be (poorly) displayed,
instead of either displaying the previous style
of info about any actual newer version,
or else just closing the window when there is no newer version
(as there surely isn't, for those already having
either 6.2.4 for Mac or 7.1 for Windows).

This might possibly be suppressed
by turning off the "new version check":

Mac [my guess here]:
<x-eudora-setting:305>
When checked, Eudora will occasionally check to see
if software updates are available.
Setting reversed; use "n" for ON, "y" for OFF!

Windows:
X-Eudora-Option:DontShowUpdates=1

I got one of these the other day, too. Don't remember getting
them before, but if, as you say, it's the result of a periodic
version check, I guess I have. Or maybe it's just displaying
this message now because of the server changes you speculated
about.

I believe your explanation is correct.

We had it here too. And yes, looks like one can fix it by pasting:

<x-eudora-setting:305>

into a new mail window and cmd-clicking the result.
