I intend to use Windock/Clip2win and (if I have understood)
_X_harbour (not _H_arbour). I believe Harbour (with an H) is more DOS-
like and _X_harbour can be 32 bit Windows, which I want.
Where can I find FAQs or a tutorial on some or all the relevant
subjects? Also, although the Roessler Software site has help files I
cannot see a "get started file" in English.
Also, what flavour of (x)Harbour should I use to make Win32 exes from
Clipper/Clip4win?
Any help welcome
Thanks in anticipation

In case you download and install the free demo at www.xHarbour.com
in the DOC subfolder of your installation you will find useful
materials such like "Getting Started with xHarbour Builder.pdf".
At www.xHarbour.org you will find a general presenation about
xHarbour, and on Sourceforge.net on the CVS in the project's DOC
subfolder there are also useful readings.
As I've never been a Clip4Win user, I can't offer support for that
library.

I knew this had been discussed recently, and I finally found a thread
in the comp.lang.clipper newsgroup from the beginning of this month.
And I noticed that it was your thread. So you have received some input
already. I will try to add some more.

If with "DOS-like" you mean Win32 console applications, then both
Harbour and the two xHarbours can do that. If you mean "plain" 16-bit
DOS, then I am not sure if that is still supported. But the difference
between the Harbours is that the commercial version of xHarbour
(xharbour.com) has a GUI library in the package. The free version of
xHarbour (xharbour.org) has no default GUI library, but there are
several free add-on alternatives - HwGUI to just mention one of
them. I believe all of those alternatives are also Harbour compatible.

I will have to pass on a specific answer regarding FAQs and tutorials,
but I can recommend that you use Google Groups to search this
newsgroup for previous discussions and links to relevant info.

You mentioned Roessler Software, so if you plan to use their Clip4Win
compatible library, I think you should ask them what they recommend.
All three - Harbour, xHarbour.org and xHarbour.com - can make
Win32 exes, but there might be things in Roessler's library that do
not fit all the different Harbours. Check that out before you decide.

Welcome over from comp.lang.clipper...

WinDock is free. You might write to the Clip4Win folks... they
advertise a 32bit version. It won't be open source, but it might
minimize your conversion difficulties if they have done
Harbour/xHarbour

xHarbour just has a more broad choice of functions. Both are
compatible with the GUI options: Hwgui, gtwin, minigui. xHarbour
has Visual xHarbour, which is pay, and leaned towards those that
are used to VB.

I posted a FAQ here for a while, left some holes in it hoping for
feedback from the members here. Got nothing.
Check the online documents. Check the various documents supplied
with xharbour, even comments if you have to. Download some of
the contrib files to see how they did things. Search this
newsgroup with Google.Groups for instances where someone mentions
"xbuild" (if you have the free version), or if you have the paid
verion it is pretty much self explanatory, and the feedback is
direct and celar.

I chose the least expensive paid version, to get myself out of my
partciular corner.

Before to go ahead in your xharbour migration project and then make
your definitive choice about which 32 bit tool you're going to use in
replacement of the old C4W layer, maybe you should have look here:
http://www.ntkproject.com.
Since novembre 2008, NTK is a free project. You will find a lot of
samples, useful contribs, tutorials & documentations and of course a
getting started manual!
