Maybe someone can help.
I'm quite a newbie in X3D/VRML (since approx. 1 year ago), and try to
implement some JavaScript prototypes, which should help to implement
multiuser X3D/VRML model railroads, by using a commercial
collaboration server like BS Collaborate.
Before I start with this hobby, it would be quite interesting, if
someone else out there does similar things, or if such things are
already available for free or for fee.
Any idea?
The description of the project can be found at <a href="http://

Thanks in advance and best regards
Christoph
Are you asking whether anyone else has created multiuser X3D
environments? Or whether anyone else has created online model
railroads?
Vivaty (www.vivaty.com) has multi-user online social environments. One
of the founders of Vivaty was promoting something called AJAX3D
(www.ajax3d.org)a few years ago, which sounds a lot like what you are
doing - using Javascript in combination with X3D to create multiuser
interactive environments. Unfortunately the AJAX website is pretty
dead, but they do have some explanations of how it works that might be
helpful to you. Vivaty supposedly uses AJAX 3D.
I don't know anything about online model railroads, but I'm sure one
made using X3, and which is therefore cross platform and cross browser
compatible would be a welcome addition to whatever else is out there.
My main interest would be to find someone who made a virtual model
railroad by VRML/X3D.
The idea of my project is to provide some Javascript prototypes that
do not create any rendering objects. The focus is on railway
kinematics (how to guide a train along its route, when switches are
changed etc.).
Yes, the Ajax3D site is interesting. Especially when introducing new
objects in a model railroad in a dynamic way, the information
interchange with the web server should be necessary.
However, my first interest is the kinematics and the communication
with the collaboration server. I intend to use the Network Sensors, as
provided by BS Contact and Octaga Player (I'm sure I'll find more).
one of the most sophisticated things i saw in vrml.
Then there was this whimsical MU train on the old blaxxun developer's
server
(now thankfully dead) ,you won't be able to connect, but you can still
see the world
assuming you have Contact installed. It maybe in 3Dplanets collection
now too

only no way to get two trains on the same track and crash them!
and on my machine the speeds are amusingly fast, which is strange
since vrml is all real time.
Thank you
Hi all
Thank you again for all the answers. I decided to start with those
prototypes. If someone would like to join this hobby(!) project, you
can find a description at http://erstersein.wordpress.com/simul-rr-english
, in particular the concept paper at http://erstersein.files.wordpress.com/2009/01/mupl-concept_3.pdf
and the download area at http://erstersein.wordpress.com/download-area
