Subject: Announcing Smalltalk Central
We are pleased to announce Smalltalk Central, a new community site
devoted to all the talk about Smalltalk:

        http://www.smalltalk-central.com/

Web presence for Smalltalk has substantially improved over the past
few years. However, there has been a need for a single, vendor-neutral
information site targeted to a broader audience of new and prospective
developers.

The mission of Smalltalk Central is to reach out to this audience, to
provide them with basic, up-to-date information and news about the
world of Smalltalk. We hope to make the community more visible and
accessible to newcomers, to those who want to learn Smalltalk and join
us.

Smalltalk Central is a 100% powered-by-Smalltalk site. The application
server, web application, CMF, and object database are all implemented
in VisualWorks. There's no PHP lurking behind the scenes.

The site has been under development for over a year, with STIC
involved in planning and steering. We have a number of new features
under active development, which we'll be rolling out over the next few
months, but mainly we hope to focus on content development.

One of our immediate tasks is to build a collection of links to
current Smalltalk resources. Formerly, this was the mission of
www.whysmalltalk.com. While it has been dormant for well over a year
now, www.whysmalltalk.com still holds some important content that
should be preserved. Towards this end, we have secured permission from
KSC (the owners of Whysmalltalk), which has been generous to let us re-
use its content.

Smalltalk Central is non-profit site. We don't want to litter it with
banners or Google ads -- the focus is to be Smalltalk only. Thus, the
site has been a volunteer effort and we could use some help. If you're
interested in getting involved, or if you have announcements,
submissions, suggestions or technical questions, please contact us
here:

        http://www.smalltalk-central.com/showDocument.ssp?section=Articles&na...

We would like to solicit links to Smalltalk-relevant content, and we
hope you will link to Smalltalk Central.

Cheers,

M. Roberts
