There is no need to modify Scheme 48 to make changes to scsh.

After you modified scsh-0.6.1/scheme/rts/read.scm, type

make build/initial.image

watch the output for warnings and if there are none related to
you patch, type

make

To get a fresh scsh/scsh.image
