--Just curious.. was there ever a donate option @ ruby-lang.org
instead of Google Ads?

Revenue that helps expand this community is very important and I
completely understand this. I'm just not so sure Google Ads are as
affective as having an 'option' to donate.

Ruby not only gives me the tools to create productive applications,
but the intuitive syntax puts those tools at my finger tips. -- That
being said, I'd much rather say thanks to Ruby in financial fashion
than be greeted with an option to purchase a ruby necklace @ whole
sale price. If a gsub could be done, I'll gladly start my donation @
100.00 USD.

You may contribute at rubycentral.org

http://rubycentral.org/index.rb?dest=contributions&css=base

http://www.rubycentral.org/pledge/

But a nice thing about google ads is they help pull in some $$ even when
no one feels like opening their wallet.

In a way I agree with you x1. I got the same feeling, but on the other
hand it is a very easy way to support ruby too.

The message that should be clear to all the ruby community is: click on
that freaking ads!!! I started clicking everyday since yesterday,
everytime I visit the site. Guys, let's click the ads on ruby-lang.org
and we will give thousands to the cause of Ruby.

Just my 2 cents.

Clicking on Google Ads without any interest in the content is stupid, as
anyone who pays or receives money for advertisement will confirm. In the
long run there is only one gainer: Google.

I guess that's one way to go about getting the ads off the site ;)

I can't speak for the Ruby site owner, but as the owner of a handful of
sites that runs Google Adsense ads, PLEASE STOP. I know you already
know that you can't get something for nothing. But your thinking is,
Google or the advertiser that paid Google can pick up the slack here.

Your thinking is wrong. Google calls these "fraudulent clicks" and
they're VERY good at detecting them. The BEST thing that can happen is
that your IP will be declared fraudulent and all your clicks (possibly
along with everyone else's that uses your ISP!) will be eliminated from
the site owner's payout. A worse option is that Google can declare the
entire ruby-lang.org site to be fraudulent! They'll stop serving ads
and refuse to pay out any pending legitimate ad money. This has
happened already to one site of mine due to overenthusiastic "help" from
zealous fans.

I would like to see the site *add* the donate feature while keeping the
Google Adsense.

I know all ads are annoying, but Adsense seems to be the least obtrusive
of the lot. I have no idea what ruby-lang.org is making but all of my
sites typically make $US5-20 per month per thousand daily visitors. All
of my sites are running donations as well; adding Adsense had no effect
on donation rates. So if ruby-lang.org is pulling 20k daily visitors,
that's somewhere around $US200 of "free money" to help pay for hosting.

Just my $0.02 (per clickthrough).

Does ruby-lang.org get 20K daily visits?

Hell, does ruby-lang.org get 20k *monthly* visits?

I'd like to second this. As a person who uses Google advertising what
you are advocating is stealing. If you aren't interested in the product
all you're doing is taking money out of my pocket or the pocket of some
other advertiser. I had to disable Ad Sense ads because they click
fraud rate is so high I wasn't seeing a return on investment. The only
way for this to continue to be effective is for advertisers to feel
they're getting effective returns on their ad dollars.
