Tried ordering "The Ruby Way" from Amazon, but after 6 weeks they have
come back and told me they are unable to get hold of a copy.

2nd hand prices are silly money.

Is it out of print, or does anybody know where I can get hold of a
copy (pref from the UK).

I bought mine used off eBay for something like $10 US. This is a great
book, as it builds upon what I had already learned from Sam's
Publishing "Ruby in 21 Days" and Pickaxe I. "The Ruby Way" is a great
reference for practical everyday applications of Ruby in action.

Awhile back I read that the Practical Programmer folks are going to
release new/updated Ruby titles. Definitely looking forward to this
seeing some of my Ruby bookshelf is getting long in the tooth (e.g. -
"Ruby in a Nutshell). Of course that's nothing compared to some of my
Smalltalk reference material like "Smalltalk-80: The Language", which
is about 16 years old.

Dear Glenn,

searching with Abebooks, I found a copy at elbeteam for 27.10 Pounds +
postage around 2-4 Pounds (from Germany)

_http://www.abebooks.co.uk/servlet/SearchResults?an=fulton&y=6&tn=the+ruby+way
&x=52&sortby=3_
(http://www.abebooks.co.uk/servlet/SearchResults?an=fulton&y=6&tn=the+ruby+way&x=52&sortby=3)

In the text description, they say, it is a new book and they send it within
1-2 working days,
so that you could have it in Britain in 2-14 days, depending on how much
postage you are
willing to pay.
I had ordered another book from that company and their service was very good
(I am not related to that company.)
If you have questions, you can send emails in English to people in Germany.

Alternatively, there seem to be several copies available from booksellers in
the
US, but nothing at a reasonable price in the UK. See the list from ISBN.nu at
_http://isbn.nu/0672320835_ (http://isbn.nu/0672320835)

If you just want to have a look at a copy or photocopy some pages , you can
find it
in several libraries in the UK:

Hope that helps,

O'Reilly has a thing called Safari -- don't have a link handy. Anyhow,
it's available electronically if you're a subscriber.

What *I* want to know is when do we get an updated copy, Hal? Surely
you've got plenty of fresh material to wow us with... :)

I saw the subject line without a '?' and thought this was an announcement.
I don't know whether to laugh at my mistake or be sad that it's not true.

This might be a good question to ask the publisher instead of Hal. We
need to let them know we're willing to part with real money for a copy
of a new edition.

It would be a tough update, of course... 30% of the work would be
(a) ripping out old stuff and (b) deciding what not to cover.
That's assuming people don't want a 4,000 page book published in
2009 and weighing as much as a Volkswagen.

If well indexed, I'd buy that as a PDF.

http://safari.oreilly.com/

You can trial safari for a bit I think. It's also much easier to
search the book online too! Matz's ORA book and Sams Teach Yourself
are also on there.

Well I'm buying Tom's book so thanks everybody. But I'd forgotten
about safari, and might look into that as well for other books.

But only if it's produced on a tighter schedule. I'm not sure I could
wait more than 30 years for Hal to finish. ;^)

Oh, ahem, hi Hal.... that obviously should have read

s/for 15 quid.*/when you pry it from my cold dead hands/

the keys are right next to each other, look !

Happy to oblige :)
I must leave now, to drink tea and discuss cricket and the weather.

Hal if Sams didn't go with a 2nd edition, or the volumeisd way
suggested by botp, could you take the title and content to the Prag
Prog imprint?

Hmm, not sure our new bookshelves could take the weight but it would
give our cats something high to perch on.
