Subject: Testing fonts for embeddability
Distilling a file on Mac Distiller 8.1.3 (23/10/2006) produces
warnings like:
%%[ Warning: ZappedSticks cannot be embedded because of licensing
restrictions. ]%%
%%[ Font vendor (Gem) does not permit this font to be embedded in
PDF. ]%%

Please, how can one test, in PostScript, whether or not a particular
font may/can be embedded?

You can query the font dictionary for FSType.
