I need a set of displacements for the characters of ISO Latin 2 (not Latin
1--Latin 2 includes the characters needed for Polish, Czech, Slovak,
Hungarian, Slovenian, and Croatian). I know how to use the techniques in
the RedBook, to extend the CharStrings dictionary of the built-in fonts
(Times, Times-Bold, Courier, Helvetica, etc.)--what I need is a reasonable
set of metrics, so that, for instance, I can position, for each font, the
ogonek with respect to the a and the e, or an apostrophe, to form a Czech
t or d with "haczek" and so on.

I don't really have time to take a trial-and-error approach, and anyway,
I haven't the trained eye of a font-designer. On the other hand, I refuse
to believe that I'm the first PostScript hacker who has needed these
numbers--someone out there MUST have gone through this exercise already,
and can help.

Thank you for your kind attention.

This information might be present in the AFM files. It will include
the specific metrics for all of the characters in the font, and might
include recommendations for creating composite characters as you
describe.

You might want to check Juliusz Chroboczek's ogonkify package,
<URL:ftp://ftp.dcs.ed.ac.uk/pub/jec/programs/>, but I need to say that the
metrics table is far from being complete. Juliusz did the Polish glyphs he
needed, I did the Slovenian ones I needed plus the Croatian d/ and Hungarian o"
and u" because they were easy to do, while most Czech, Slovak and Romanian
glyphs still need to be done. It fits my need (printing from Netscape onto a
PostScript printer) just fine, but your mileage may vary. Still, taking into
account what you'd paid for it... :-}

Best wishes, Primoz
