HP's Bizare pricing for Postscript printer memory.

That's £5440 per GB or $9646 / GB.
I got 128 MB from Crucial for my printer for £29.99
Am I missing something? With the cost of RAM today, it would seem almost
as cheap to put the memory on the board (no socket), as 128 MB must cost
next to noting as chips. HP would save the cost of a the socket.
Surely, nobody in their right mind buys a low-end postscript pritner and
sends more than 3x the orignal cost of the printer on memory.
Is there *any* justification for selling 128 MB of RAM in a printer for
over £600 ??

The socket costs HP $0.20 (twenty cents), the RAM costs $5 (five dollars)
as a SIMM, but _more_ (and more board space) as individual RAM chips.

Maximizing _expected_ profit after all costs (parts, part vendor admin,
assembly, marketing, sales, ...) and all cross-elasticities.

Not so much bizarre as optimistic.
I suspect many companies WILL buy the HP stuff because they have a
policy of buying only the recommended parts.
This looks very like an accessory that never had its price adjusted
downwards because it was selling just fine.
