I use PostScript to create pages which are then edited in Illustrator.
Like many drawing programs, Illustrator allows objects to be grouped
and ungrouped. Can pdfmark be used to create such groups? My hope is
that there is a way to start-group, render a load of stuff, end-group,
and loh and behold, the stuff is grouped together. Is this possible,
because if it is, it isn't obvious from the pdfmark manual.

No, there is no way in PostScript to represent these Illustrator-only
concepts.

Even though Illustrator saves such groups in PDF?

Yes. Nor in PDF.

When you save an Illustrator PDF, Illustrator writes a normal PDF, and
then writes its own information too. When you reopen the PDF,
Illustrator uses this information, NOT the PDF contents.

(You can verify this by editing the PDF, then reopening it;
Illustrator normally reopened the unchanged document).

Damn.

Thank you for your helpful and prompt reply, even though it wasn't what
I wanted.
