The ISS has a lot of software created by programmers from different
countries. Many languages, many operation systems and different
hardware platforms are used. For example, in this NASA image

you can see notebook (near the astronaut). The program, which runs in
this notebook, helps the crew to photograph Earth’s surface. The
program was written in PL/1.

This is fantastic news. Is there any other information about the
software you can give us?

Tim.

I can add a more fantastic point. Strictly speaking, in the beginning
of the ISS mission there was a PL/1 compiler (in addition to the
program) on a crew notebook. At that time the programmers didn’t rely
on the connection between onboard and ground computers. So, in the
case of a serious mistake in the program, they intended to uplink a
relatively short source code (or even to dictate corrections to the
crew) in order to compile the program anew. Fortunately, they didn’t
need to use so eccentric methods in real life. By the way, they still
use this old notebook onboard now.
