I have this impression of you sitting on a white cloud firing thunderbolts
down to earth every-so-often, in the form of replies to comp.lang.perl.misc.
Do you have a life.

I play a little jazz trumpet in the style of Chet Baker (but not in the same
league). There was a jazz musician called Tad Dameron.

When Tad's not operating Stonehenge for me, or teaching one of our
on-site or open-enrollment classes, he answers questions on
comp.lang.perl.misc, which is why I offered the position to him in the
first place. I liked the breadth of his knowledge, and his ability to
peer into the core of the issue and answer respectfully, both
essential skills in front of a classroom.

I'm sure he knows more about Perl than I do, but it is noticeable how
singularly unhelpful his comments are.

If you really think that Tad's comments are unhelpful, then it is really
clear how much more he knows about Perl than you do.

Even if Tad did nothing but post the Posting Guidelines he would be one
of the most singularly helpful contributors on CLPM. They (the
Guidelines) explain how to possibly find the answer to your question
yourself, and if you can't, how to ask your question in a smart way in
order to maximize your chances of getting a useful reply.

If you ask a good question, Tad is often the first to answer it. If you
ask a dumb question, Tad will (quite politely) point out how you can ask
your question in a better way the next time, and often answer it
anyway. If you ask an egregious question, he'll tell you to take a
hike. Some people don't like his corrections, but he makes them because
he wants to prevent CLPM from being overwhelmed by dumb and egregious
questions.

If you find him singularly unhelpful, you can always killfile him. The loss will be yours.

The only noticeable thing to me on this thread is how singularly
little benefit some folks are capable of getting from usenet. As
such, one is bound to ask oneself what point there would be in reading
any further questions or contributions from them.

Au contraire, mon amie.
Tad's replies are the pure meat, without any garnishings. That may make them
hard to digest for some, but for those who like to get to the core of things
it makes them delightful.
No unnecessary verbage and almost always smack on target down to the point.

You won't notice if you make the appropriate killfile entry.

Au contraire. While on c.l.p.m. I've been corrected by Tad more frequently
than anyone else -- including once within the last hour! Tad's comments are
... terse, but almost always to the point. Being terse, they don't soften
the blow when you learn the errors of your ways -- but if your ego is
vulnerable you shouldn't be posting on c.l.p.m. in the first place. Tad's
comments force my code to be more precise -- and that has been reflected in
more precise instruction of my own Perl students.

Hmm. I had noticed Tad was far more helpful with his commentary. With a
Google Groups search for "perl mcclellan segraves" I found confirmation of
Tad's helpful insights, at least for me.

Thanks, Tad. Keep up the great work.

The OP was clearly a case of the pot calling the snow black.

Compare Tad's reply and Julia's reply in this thread :

http://
groups.google.com/groups?threadm=01c2864c%246cb47f00%2488498a90%40gmtoomey

[that should be one line, bu tmy newsreader defeated me]

Which one seems helpful? Which one seems like an unprovoked "thunderbolt"?

Sorry for the reply to this post, and not the original, but the OP went
into the killfile back in November.

I think many of you have gotten the wrong end of the stick from what I said.
Tadd Dameron was a Jazz great.

I often scan down the listings in the NG for Tad's offerings because they
are almost always useful, funny and correct.

You can call me [1]
Tim();
or you can call me
Tad; # [2]
but you doesn't have to call me
&Tim();
nor
&Tim;

[1] ala Bill Saluga.

[2] Tad() was pre-declared some <mumble> years ago.

Or any other part of usenet!

I completely agree, James. Tad's doesn't pussyfoot around with unnecessary
verbiage -- he simply points out what the poster is doing wrong, and
usually points to how to do it right. If one thinks that "terseness"
implies that he's being short with you, then you'll think he's rude. If,
otoh, one thinks that terseness is simply the most efficient form of
communication, you'll see he's a great resource.

Tad's one of the most useful resources on c.l.p.m. I can't tell you how
often I've started to respond to a question, only to find that Tad has
already answered more or less what I would have; often more concisely and
to the point.

I believe that -- even when saying nothing -- one is supposed to:

Intersperse your comments *following* each section of quoted text to
which they relate. Unappreciated followup styles are referred to as
"Jeopardy" (because the answer comes before the question), or "TOFU".
