Where's a similar algorithm on-line?

The README of GNU ed is where the quoted text comes from in the first
place.

A implementaion of an algorithm isn't quite the same thing as an
description, though it might suffice sometimes.

Thirty years old is hardly old, not when we can remember when it came out.

it's also a classic, which should make it quite available. One can still
find copies of "The C Programming Language" at used book sales, and the
first edition came out in 1978.

Note the book came in various flavors, I seem to recall it was originally
about Fortran, and then as other languages came along, he adapted the
software tools to the other languages.

"Software Tools" was written in the 1970's, with example code in RatFor
("Rational Fortran"), which was a C-like preprocessor for Fortran.

When K&P updated ST in the '80s, they revised it to use the
then "up-and-coming" educational language Pascal, hence "Software Tools in

WOW, thanks! I'd never have the confidence to ask for the
final-target. Hoping to approach it via multiple steps, eg.:
unix+ed+editor+algorithm ...etc. failed.

I didn't want the actual code, but -/bwk/pascaltools.txt
is very clean. So I've started to try to decode it.

You could try the emule network or torrents. The book is definitely
available.
