Hi guys. Is Cache Server Pages the only technology for writing
server-side scripts that will run on both Windows and Linux servers? I'm
looking for something to play with initially to try out some ideas...

Thanks
Graham

Not at all.

If you're running on a Cache server, you could use the original
WebLink technology which is still included with Cache builds. There's
nothing CSP can do that can't also be achieved using WebLink. If you
use our EWD technology, you can even compile your applications down to
WebLink routines - making the use of WebLink (or CSP for that matter)
a piece of cake.

Alternatively you could interface via PHP, JSP or ASP.Net, using our
MGWSI gateway to provide the gateway to Cache at the back-end. Indeed
if you use MGWSI you can use GT.M as an alternative back-end.

So, plenty of choices beyond CSP!

For MGWSI and EWD, see http://www.mgateway.com

... and, if you like free software (Open Source), try MJSP:

Thanks guys. Since I'm presently using DataTree on Windows but want a
solution that will run on Linux/Unix I'm going to have to think
carefully. I just looking to see if my idea will fly at this stage.

One page of your website says I can use MGWSI to integrate legacy MUMPS
applications with Java or .Net. I'm not sure if I can use it to
integrate a DataTree app with PHP?

Thanks

Unfortunately no - we don't have a DataTree connector for MGWSI. Not
sure what you can do. Time to migrate to a more modern
implementation?

Thanks. It could be. Decisions, decisions!

Oh dear, I'm not doing well here. I tried the Cache download but it
seems to want a Pentium 4 and I have a mere AMD Sempron; and GT.M is
only for Linux. It looks as though I'm snookered...

[KSB] Linux is not a bad thing to try - I kicked the Windows habit in
1999 and haven't looked back since. That said, there are such things
as virtual machines of EWD on GT.M on Linux that you can run on a
Windows host.

Indeed so. Download the EWD Virtual Appliance (go to www.mgateway.com,
select the "Enterprise Web Developer" tab, then the "Download" tab),
install the free VMWare Player or VMWare Server on Windows, and fire
up the Virtual Appliance. It comes with GT.M pre-installed and
pre-configured, ready to run......and of course EWD comes free with it
too, so you can really build your Mumps-based web applications
properly!

You'll have a pre-built Linux environment running inside your Windows
environment, and with most of the Linux-related stuff already catered
for you in the Virtual Appliance - use WinSCP and a browser and you'll
be able to do most things from within Windows!

Sounds good to me! I have one machine with Ubuntu but too much on my
development m/c to jump ships any day soon. This sounds like just what I
need.

Many thanks
