I had read those articles before, but I read them again. Still no good explanation.

But I found the “why we have cons” thread in the scheme group,
and I think I see what your issue is now.

Unfortunately (for you) and contrary to popular belief, CL is designed
for programmers, not mathematicians. If you want to insulate yourself
from details, then stick to Mathematica – no reason to rant about lisp.
