However, J++ at the moment is sort of a dead end since as you probably
know, Microsoft does not support it any longer.

I take it that you recommend a different Java developing environment?

If you're simply looking for an IDE, try Sun's Forte
(http://www.sun.com/forte/ffj/). If you're looking for a true "compiler"
for building standalone executables, check out the JET compiler
(http://www.excelsior-usa.com/). It builds standalone .exe's in a Win32
environment, costs $200 less than Visual C++ Professional retail... and, you
know, isn't made by Microsoft (which helps me sleep better at night).
I've been checking prices for Borland JBuilder. The professional version
can be had for $249, including free shipping.

Them's fighting words. SlickEdit is an editor you don't want to
strangle.
For more detail, please look up the key words mentioned in this post in

Custom computer programming since 1963. Ready to take on new work.
I took that step after many hours of frustrating problems with Visual
J++ (if only they had maintained the specifications.... their IDE would have
been among the best to use ... for windows that is)
There is a version of forte completely free (Community Edition). I would
recommend that as a start up point.
If you do take it, FOLLOW THE TUTORIALS PROVIDED (it'll save you an
awful lot of time at a later stage).
Good luck and happy coding

This from the man who criticises emacs users for being

What's the difference between the Foundation version and the professional
version of JBuilder.

"Microsoft will continue to ship and support Visual J++ as a stand-alone
product, but customers who want to take full advantage of the .NET platform
using the Java language should use JUMP. Because Visual J++ does not
natively target the .NET platform, it will ship separately from Visual
Studio.NET. The JUMP tools can be hosted in the Visual Studio.NET integrated
development environment."
