Differences between J++ and Java?

background and I have a J++ compiler (part of Microsoft's Visual Studio).
And if there is a significant difference, how hard would it be learn Java,
once you know J++?

VJ++ is essentially java (unless you start using the Microsoft Language
Extensions). If you compile your programs for AWT (The Abstract Window
Toolkit) or for the console, it shouldn't take you much to migrate from J++
to a different environment (specially if you already know C++).
However, J++ at the moment is sort of a dead end since as you probably
know, Microsoft does not support it any longer.

but about 30 other languages. Despite its name its is NOT a visual IDE
(that is, no drag and drop GUI's), but for writing JAVA(tm) I like it best.
Its kinda like NotePad on steroids.

If you're simply looking for an IDE, try Sun's Forte
(http://www.sun.com/forte/ffj/). If you're looking for a true "compiler"
for building standalone executables, check out the JET compiler
(http://www.excelsior-usa.com/). It builds standalone .exe's in a Win32
environment, costs $200 less than Visual C++ Professional retail... and, you
know, isn't made by Microsoft (which helps me sleep better at night).

I'm personally using Forte for Java Internet edition (on Win2000). It is
a beautiful development environment at a very inexpensive price and
relatively easy to learn.
The only draw back is the amount of memory it requires.
I took that step after many hours of frustrating problems with Visual
J++ (if only they had maintained the specifications.... their IDE would have
been among the best to use ... for windows that is)
There is a version of forte completely free (Community Edition). I would
recommend that as a start up point.
If you do take it, FOLLOW THE TUTORIALS PROVIDED (it'll save you an
awful lot of time at a later stage).
