Newest Java Update failed

Hello NG, if I try to make a Java-Update from Vers. 6.7. to 6.17, I get
the following message: Decompression of the core files failed. What can
I do to prevent it? (I am working with Windows 7 and Mozilla Firefox

We'll need the exact error message, including the error number. There's
a specific fix for this, I had it happen to me, but without the exact
string to Google for I can't find Sun's FAQ on this.

Odds are its a process still running on the old version. Look in msconfig
and task manager and turn off anything java related, but it might be a long
winded fix from my experence its often easier to manually delete the old
version and then do a new install. I do not know why older versions seemed
to keep files locked, but they tend to do it I find.
You must remember to remove the bits that sit in the admin area as well, ie
the xp application data for the user involved, though I've no idea about
this on 7.

With a bit of luck the next clean install will work.
If you had updated more often, you might have gotten away with it!

As a general rule, always shut down a program before installing, even
when it initiated the download. To be safe, reboot to free up any DLLs
before the install.

The problem with java was that it still left the service routine or quick
start running even after a reboot, hence my advice to stop them. I now
keep a copy of unlocker assistant on the pc for this use. It is a Windows ,
shall we say, feature, t sometimes stopping processes does not stop them.
