Hello,

I wanted to use LaTeXDraw, which is a .jar file. Libs, etc., are
included in the good folders, but when I run
$ java -jar LaTeXDraw.jar, the loading screen of LaTeXDraw appears,
but, when the loading is finished, nothing but a mere window, with the
`LaTeXDraw' title appears. In the console, I receive dozens of
`Null peer?!'

I am using gij. Any idea? (Sorry, I am totally new with Java.)

Thanks.

The LaTeXDraw help forum is located at:
<http://sourceforge.net/projects/latexdraw/forums/forum/525822>

Have you read and followed the installation directions in the
download zip file?

Libraries for "java -jar" have to be in directories outside the JAR you're
running, not inside the JAR. I assume that's what you mean by "the good folders".

"Null peer", I find from googling the term, is a message from AWT that it
cannot create a window on the host OS. I find no reference to it so far more
recent that Java 1.1.8. (Java is currently at 1.6, a.k.a. "Java 6".) The
references I do find are to a bug in Java running under Windows, fixed in Java
1.1.8.

> I am using gij. Any idea? (Sorry, I am totally new with Java.)

I am not familiar with gij. What is that?

What version of Java are you using? What OS? What is the error message
(copied and pasted, not paraphrased)?

For sure! I am going to check the forum.

I must have done the same googling, as I had the same results when I
looked on it.

GIJ is the GNU Interpreter for Java (it is a VM). If you want more
info on it, you may check http://gcc.gnu.org/java/.

> What version of Java are you using? What OS? What is the error
> message (copied and pasted, not paraphrased)?

$ java -version
java version "1.5.0"
gij (GNU libgcj) version 4.3.2

The error message is textually the one I posted on last message,
/i.e./ the `null peer' problem, with the ponctuation marks, as given
in my first message.

The problem is that this error message is not really explicit. Could
it be related with OpenGL or something like this?

I am under Debian Lenny, with kernel 2.6.26-2-686-bigmem.

Thanks for any answer.

That's part of your problem right there. You should use a real Java.

The LaTeXDraw site mentions requiring JRE 1.6:

It appears to be available in sid:

Is there some reason you can't just download it from java.sun.com?

I use Ubuntu, which also is based on apt-get for package installation, but I
routinely use the java.sun.com link to download and install Java versions.
The .bin file expands itself into a subdirectory that you then plant where you
want it.

I thought Debian didn't use RPMs. Anyway, sometimes when you "su" you lose
PATH information and other envars due to not picking profiles and other .*rc
files.

> that it cannot find the basic binary utilities. However, the output

Using Ubuntu, which, like Debian, uses APT for package management, I don't
download the RPM but the other Linux installation file that is not RPM based.
It's essentially a self-extracting compressed file in a .bin file which
expands to a Java directory tree. I then copy the tree to wherever I put Java
directory trees (under /opt/java/, in my case). I'm pretty sure RPMs don't
work in Ubuntu, but maybe Debian is different.

The Java installed by the Ubuntu APT mechanism is OpenJDK version 6 and it
seems pretty stable and complete.

Oh, and I don't "su" (actually, I don't "sudo") to do the .bin extraction, and
I don't install the Java directories with root as the owner. I've defined a
normal-privileged user (with a primary group for it) that isn't allowed to log
in whose purpose is to own such things.

A web search using the terms: debian lenny sun java
seems to reveal considerable installation angst.

It also provides a link to a fairly active debian-java mailing list:

Okay, I did it (with the non-rpm .bin), moved everything into /opt/java/.

I have installed sun-java6-jre using apt-get, to see if it would do
the difference, but typing `java' still shows me
==
Usage: gij [OPTION] ... CLASS [ARGS] ...
to invoke CLASS.main, or
gij -jar [OPTION] ... JARFILE [ARGS] ...
to execute a jar file
Try `gij --help' for more information.

I do not think that `gij' is a bad thing, but I think that using the
Sun kit is better. But what?

Jeff,

I looked at
http://www.rsreese.com/2009/05/installing-sun-java-on-debian-lenny.html

I therefore installed sun-java6-jdk, and updated java-alternatives,
but
$ gij
still gives me the same output. The problem with LaTeXDraw is still
the same.

To summarize the results,
1. I have installed sun-java6-jre (with apt-get),
2. I have installed sun-java6-jdk (with apt-get),
3. I have tried to install the most recent .bin of Java 6, directly
coming from Sun's website. This .bin gave its content, and I put it in
/opt/java/. It seems not to be recognized.

What do I have to do? Thanks.

To Jeff (his message still does not appear in my Gnus): thanks for
these links, but I am confident with LaTeX. I just wanted to make my
good LaTeXDraw friend (which was actually working under Windows XP)
working here too.

I am still a little bit surprised that such a problem remains
unsolved, as it seems to be simple (not to me, okay, but I am really
new to Java-related stuff).

Thanks for the links. ;)

Yes, Sun's jdk-6u17-linux-i586.bin is current; the repositories still
have the previous minor revision. The bin is a wrapper for the licensing
agreement and registration page. You should be able to execute it:

$ sh jdk-6u17-linux-i586.bin

I like to keep JVMs in /usr/lib/jvm. Once installed, I use
update-java-alternatives to manage multiple versions. IIRC, Lew uses a
custom approach, about which I'll defer to him.

That is what I did. As I explained before, I then copied the content

Linux prompt:
$ man 8 update-java-alternatives

or

<http://www.linuxcertif.com/man/8/update-java-alternatives/>

See also:

The simplest expedient is to replace the existing soft link in
/usr/lib/jvm with one that points to your new jdk:

java-6-sun -> jdk1.6.0_17
java-6-sun-1.6.0.16
jdk1.6.0_17

You can also edit a copy of the existing *.jinfo, but you'll have to let
update-alternatives know about it, too. See Lew's Debian admin link.

Here's the installed version applet, for reference:
