Others besides me have expressed concern how Oracle might deliberately
destroy MySQL competition when it buys Sun.

If you give someone a program, you will frustrate them for a day; if you teach them how to program, you will frustrate them for a lifetime.

There is always MariaDB, if MySQL causes any problems.

Or a _really_ free database: PostgreSQL :)

The latter would IMHO be a better alternative to Oracle anyway, as it's
programming language is quite close to Oracle's PL/SQL, while MySQL is
more different and crippled.

A direct replacement: http://www.enterprisedb.com/ PostgreSQL based
alternative for Oracle.

This is not Java related.

And given Oracle's promised to the EU of December 14th its seems
a bit outdated.

Or maybe not. After reading the fine print at that site it
looks as if their real agenda it to get MySQL to switch
from the current GPL license to something else (permissive
license or GPL with linking exception).

That is a very relevant discussion. But it is not really related to
the Oracle SUN deal at all.
