If you were in my shoes what would you do?
In a vain attempt to make this on topic, it would be nice if I could
write Java plugins to do thing like sort my incoming mail.

And since the $29.95 costing Spamnix also is a learning-based spam
blocker --according to their website-- I expect you'll get similar
results with Thunderbird's Bayesian based spam filtering (and for free).
There are several extensions for Thunderbird available, already, and you
can always develop your own (see
<http://developer.mozilla.org/en/docs/Building_an_Extension>), with
Javascript, not Java, and a whole bunch of other XML based techniques.

Roedy,
Surely you jest? You probably forgot more about Java than I can remember.

FWIW, I've found Evolution an acceptable replacement for
Microsoft's Exchange mail client (I would forget its exact
name) but can't say regarding Eudora; I've never used it.
I don't know if Evolution will run on Windows.

I talk about it more. 112,000 posts on Google compared with your
1500.

Yes, agreed. Although I don't use the learning spam filter, my brother
was very positive about it. He still does a review of filtered mails,
because some things like newsletters sometimes give a false positive.
Thunderbird is not the best for nntp though (IMHO).

Seconded here as well. Another big keyfeature (IMO) is that it runs on several
platforms (Windows, Linux, etc) and that its also easy to transfer data between
those platforms (copying message filters and spam filters for example).
