The "venal" part might have to do something with it - I do not know
where it's implied.

Of course, that's beyond the point I wanted to make:  Given that so many
people are willing to work on a Fortran compiler *written in C*, I do
not understand why some management types are hesitant to allow Fortran
implementations of certain applications to be continued to be developed.

It's not like there's a shortage of people wanting to work on them,
apparently.  And it's also not because those people do not understand C.
