I guess another point...some of the code snippets are in an atrocious
style with no indention, no line spacing, etc. Recommend a standardized
clean, easier to read style for code snippets.

What is the Fortran forum?

A magazine published by the Association of Computing Machinery.
I have just picked up this thread.
I'm the current editor. Here is the acm web address
http://portal.acm.org/browse_dl.cfm?coll=portal&dl=ACM&idx=J286&linked=1&part=newsletter
I'll have a chat with the acm over some of the issues raised.

I noticed that clf's Arjen Markus contributes this time. I wish I had I
had the means to buy every fortran tool I wanted, but alas, I was only
middle class before Bush II.

My starting salary was 21600 in 1981. I thought I was rich.
It's a pity that Fortran Forum remains so inaccessible. I have tried to
subscribe a few times in the past, but always failed (can't remember
what the ACM site objected to, perhaps not having a US-registered
address or US credit card, or maybe that I wasn't already an ACM
member).
I've also tried to read it via the Athens system which allows UK
academics to access a vast number of scientific publications on-line,
but the ACM chooses to not make this one available that way. I have
access to two university libraries (one a copyright library), but
neither of them takes the paper version.
I know that I have contributed to Fortran Forum (because the editor has
been kind enough to send me a copy of my own text) but as far as I'm
concerned, it remains a write-only medium. And I have not yet come
across another Fortran user in my own field who has even heard of the
publication. :-(

Come on, Clive, you've been moaning about this biennially for years. I
don't live in the US, do not have a US credit card, and am not a
member of the ACM. And I have NO PROBLEM suscribing.
If at first you don't succeed ...

Mike Metcalf

I am the sort of person who usually has all sorts of trouble with
things like this, but I had no trouble registering for the free
reading of Volume 27, Issue 1 (April 2008) issue. I am sure I could
have read other issues if I had wanted to.
And
It may be that if I tried again, I might succeed (I've just managed to
buy tickets on a train in Italy on the trenitalia website only at the
5th attempt, the other 4 having been refused) and maybe just a bit more
persistence is needed. But my other comments still stand: no printed
copies in libraries anywhere that I know of, not available to UK
universities via Athens, etc. It is the very opposite of being
well-known and easily accessible. This is a pity, as it reinforces the
image of Fortran as a niche language, with a dwindling base of users.
I know that the ACM doesn't pay its authors anything, and I suspect that
the editor doesn't get paid much if anything at all, certainly not
enough to compensate for the time it takes to edit. In that case, an
equivalent online publication would have a lot of benefits and the main
disadvantage would be the prestige that the ACM brings to Fortran Forum,
which I suspect isn't all that much.

Indeed. The cost is small - e.g. a quarter of the cost of the cheapest
membership of the BCS which gets me to UK Fortran Forums etc. It's the
fact that potential subscribers have to jump through hoops, and the
results are a journal that isn't freely available. I know it's how
academic journals used to run, and some are still jealously guarded in
the same way, but the world is changing, fortunately, and a lot more
information can now be freely redistributed. I think minority interests
like Fortran have something to gain from changing the approach. Just my
suggestion...

Substitute the first occurrence of the string "of" with the string
"for" in the line being parsed,
Ian
ah, in my editor, the "s" would be "c" for "change"...
You'd think that since I'm a member and get blasted with a half dozen
emails from them every day, I'd get that right.

Nice turn of phrase. :-) Accurate too, which makes it even better.

There is a very nice magazine from ACM called Communications of the ACM.
Nice, big full color, regular magazine. Sometimes has articles with
code or pseudo code. Semi scholarly (abstract, references, edited to
the hilt)...how about some Fortran articles in there??
