I've been trying to find a decent newsreader + server to read this
forum. Google groups is full of spam. I've tried several stand-alone
newsreaders and none of them make it easy to delete posts or threads
that I'm not interested in (I've tried Pam, XPN, KNode, slrn, and I
think a couple others). So I'm feeling more than a little frustrated
that I can't get such a seemingly simple feature (a delete button that
works).
So anyway, I was wondering what you guys use to read this forum and
what you might recommend.
Daniel.

I use Outlook Express on Windows. Server is eternal september, this filters
most spam before I see it. What remains is easy to identify, and easily
removed with the DEL key.

Thanks.
Ok. I've installed Thunderbird and registered with Eternal September.
It's been years since I've used Thunderbird... I'm having trouble
setting up the News server account. I setup the basic account, but I
can't figure out where to enter the username and password that I got
from Eternal September. When I go to account settings I can only edit
things like my name, email and server URL. I don't see a place to
enter the Eternal username + password.
Help?
Sorry, Linux. Some times I forget about Windows (I don't personally
know anyone who runs Windows).
I've registered with Eternal September as you and Lynn suggested
(thanks!) and now I'm experimenting with Thunderbird... I just need to
find where to enter my Eternal username and password...
Daniel.
I use MacSOUP, but that one is Mac only, which I'm guessing isn't your
platform. I thought most newsreaders had ways of killing threads, but
I'm not up on Windows ones at all.
One point of terminology that might be confusing you. "Delete" is the
wrong term for what you want to do. Well, I suppose one indeed might
want to delete some of the spam (and maybe even some of the posters of
it), but you don't tend to have permission to do that to other people's
postings (or to other people). No software is going to change that. All
you can do is make it so that you don't see the stuff; you can't
actually delete it from the server. What you can do is often referred to
as "killing" a thread. Killing only changes what you see, so permissions
aren't relevant to that.
As for news servers, I use individual.net, which costs me... I think it
was 10 Euros per year.

I've never entered a user+pass for aioe.org in the tbird setup. I just entered the server name in various places and,
voila, it just worked.
The only "spam" posts I see now are the various folks asking "why is there so much spam?"
:o)
cheers,

I don't use Windows. I use Linux. Pam can kill threads, but for some
reason it works very unreliably. When I select a post, some times it
shows it and some times it doesn't. Some times it just freezes
too... :-( I forget what the problem with XPN was. I know that at
least some readers I tried didn't let me kill messages (e.g. Google
Groups).

Ok, killing. I borrowed the "delete" term from email lists. You say
you deleted an email, but of course you didn't delete it from the
mailing list server.

Thanks. If Eternal gives me spam, I'll try individual.net.
Daniel.
Under "Server Settings", check the "always request authentication when
connecting to this server" item. The next time you try to open E-S, it
will prompt you for the username and password, and give you the option
of remembering them so you don't need to enter them again.
Thanks. I'm sending this message with Thunderbird + Eternal.
I still see spam, but I sort of found a way to deal with it with Tbird.
I select the spam messages and press "K". That doesn't make the messages
go away, but if I go to another folder and come back, the messages are gone.
It's a bit annoying, but at least I can get rid of them. I still don't
understand why you can't kill / delete posts as easily as with email.
But at least this is an improvement.
Thanks.
Daniel.
Its "just a easy" with Outlook Express ...

Well, I'm not about to switch to Windows just to use Outlook Express.
Daniel.
I use eternal september since this morning. thanks a lot for the link!
I use Thunderbird 3 on windows at work, but I think it'll be ok at home
too with it on Ubuntu.
Adrien
The level of spam on E-S is very low. Although you do get some of them
that get through occasionally, I'm generally satisfied with using 'k' to
get rid of them.

Using 'k' is just as easy as with e-mail. It's just the key that's
different, 'k' vs 'del'. :-P
What's annoying is not what key it is. If anything, the letter 'k' is
easier to type for a touch typist like myself. What's annoying is that
to have the posts actually disappear, I have to move my hand over to the
mouse, select some other folder, and then go back to the c.l.fortran
folder.Alternatively, I can close Tbird and start it again. I think
that's annoying. When I press 'k' the post should vanish.
Daniel.
While I generally agree, non-disappearance allows you to change your
mind (at least, until you leave the folder). Otherwise, if you press
the wrong K key, you couldn't undelete the thread anymore. (Unless they
provide an additional option, "Show ignored threads").

I checked. Tbird has a "Show ignored threads" option and it works.
Looking closely, it seems like Tbird only updates the c.l.fortran folder
if you go to a different folder and then come back. It's not just about
ignoring threads. Very odd...
Daniel.
Hmmm... Did you try a "reload" (I don't know what would be the name in
Tbird, I don't know Tbird at all) after killing threads? I'm just
guessing, some web "things" work this way. Anyway, I do use google
groups... shame on me... but now I'm very trained in identifying and
skipping whatever I don't want to see, including spam...
Fernando.
I'll just note that
http://coding.derkeiler.com/Archive/Fortran/comp.lang.fortran/
seems to have very little spam (much, much less than google groups), if
you're just interested in reading the archives.
Thanks, I do not have to install software-create accounts-set
passwords, and it works. I like it.
Fernando.
