The production version of the Sun Studio 12 program development suite is now available for download at no charge from http://developers.sun.com/sunstudio.
The marketing note I received says:
What is Sun Studio? Previously known as the SunOS compilers, SPARCworks, Sun Workshop, Forte Developer, and Sun ONE Studio, Sun Studio 12 includes the following key components:
* Parallelizing C, C++, and Fortran compilers * Next-generation IDE based on NetBeans 5.5.1 * Code-level debugger * Memory debugger * Performance profiler * OpenMP support * Optimized libraries, including Sun Performance Library * Multithreading tools
It also lists the following enhancements:
* Brand new IDE * Compilers for Linux (first ever!) [ the first production versions of C, C++ and f95 for Linux from Sun, anyway ] * New multithreading/multicore tools, including the new Thread Analyzer * Outstanding Performance- up to 25% increase over Sun Studio 11 (& up to 80% over GCC 4.1) * Improved GCC compatibility to ease adoption

Does this offer a C99 capability? -- merl the perl

I am not sure what you are asking. If you are asking if the C compiler supplied with Sun Studio 12 conforms to the C99 standard, the answer is yes, up to bugs. If you are asking if the Sun Studio 12 Fortran compiler implements BIND(C) and allows linking with code generated by the GNU C compiler, the answer is again yes, up to bugs.

I don't really use this IDE even though I have had access to SPARCworks, workshop, etc, for years. Only when I run into a stubborn bug do I fall back to it but only as a debugger...and I tell you, back when it was not Netbeans-based I seem to recall that it used to start right away, now that it is Netbeans-based it takes such a long time!

I would like to download this software, but I had trouble with it last time. I wouldn't care so much about getting the download %100 correct except that I've got a brand new OS (XP), and don't want to be ripping software suites in and out. I already have an identity with Sun.
Can I take up the install with you personally? -- Wade Ward

Sun Studio 12 supports Solaris and some flavors of Linux. It has not been ported to Windows.

That's the rub. It probably wouldn't kill me to have a non-windows partition. I've got a gentoo disk as well as a Caldera 2.2. I've got a little bit of a budget too. Does Solaris come with a single executable for the install for intel architecture?
I actually saw Tarkovsky's "Solaris" in my Russian film class, which was by far my favorite class of that semester. -- Wade Ward

I'm not sure what you are asking. Sun's Solaris Developer Express DVD contains both Solaris Nevada and Sun Studio, but not the production versions of them.

I've taken up this issue at alt.solaris.x86, where I had the good fortune to run into a buddy. Many of the downloads from Sun burn an image onto either cd or dvd. -- Wade Ward
