I am very sorry to hear this. Julian was a great guy and a major figure
in the Forth community for many years.

Sincerely,

How sad! I have enjoyed many of the things he has written, and
learned a lot from them. And I'll especially miss his apt
quotations.

A sad loss. I enjoyed Julian's wit and modesty, as well as his
expertise. We wrote to one another occasionally. I;m sorry that we
didn't meet in person.

I intend to download and save some of his site. I hope there will be a
home for his Forth material and permission to put it there. Any ideas
will be appreciated.

Although I didn't know Julian Noble personally, I am very sorry to
hear this. We collaborated in a number of on-line Forth projects
-- double-precision floats was the last one. His writings were great
fun and always thought-provoking.

I'm very sorry to hear this. I've enjoyed reading his posts and studying
his site over the years.

Go Forth, Julian!

He was a good person. I will always treasure the memory of him fixing
the light switch in my room at Rochester with a Swiss army knife
while gleefully quoting Suetonius.

We shall miss him, and we shall remember him.

A loss for all of us.

Nine of the algorithms in the Forth Scientific Library were from Julian.
There is even a contribution from him which hasn't yet been reviewed; I
have hopes that it can be considered for inclusion without his personal
involvement. There are also links to his valuable discussions of forth
for scientific work. I, too, hope that material can be preserved for the
future.

Besides being an enjoyable and inspiring co-forther, Julian was a pioneer
in the use of forth for scientific programming. The design of a
practical implementation of numerical arrays with a good syntax for their
use in analytical work was presented in his book "Scientific Forth", and
is at the heart of the FSL as well as other work in the scientific use of
forth. It would be hard to overstate the importance of his contributions
to the entire forth community.

My sincere regrets. Julian and I conversed by email several times over the
years, regarding various Forth issues. At a scientific conference a few years
ago, I met one of the students who graduated from his department. Needless to
say, the student knew about Forth. His book, Scientific Forth, rekindled my
interest in Forth in the mid-90s, after a long period of absence in the area. I
will miss his postings to comp.lang.forth.

Like many others, I did not know Julian personally, but I know him as
one of the most eminent persons in our community. I regret he has
passed away and my condolences to his family and friends.

I thought that Julian was being a bit quiet of late as I hadn't seen
postings from him recently. My condolances to his family. He will be missed
here in c.l.f.

_Scientific Forth_, which I bought back in the early 1990s, was one of
the all-time great Forth books. It used Forth, but it wasn't truly
about Forth. It was one of those rare books which which tackled
difficult-seeming problems, and then after seeing the final code I
realized that I the difficulty was something I had built up in my
mind. Julian's code was clear, elegant, and used Forth the way it was
intended.

He told me stories about economics from Herodotus. I probably
wouldn't have gotten around to reading Herodotus except for him.

I went to a Rochester convention and slept in the dorm. John Noble was
in the next room, alone. My roommate was asleep, and woke up when the
noise started. "We have to call maintenance. That machine is tearing
itself apart." I tried to remember. "People told me about John Noble's
snoring. That must be it." It was surprisingly loud through a
cinderblock wall. Later Larry Forsley explained that they never ever
gave John a roommate even if he asked for one. After that year they
gave him an end room and filled the room next to him last. And he
started coming to conventions with his wife and they got a hotel room.

He was not only a gentleman. He was a warm-hearted, friendly
gentleman.

Yes, that is quite sad. :-( I know that Julian Noble
contributed much to the content of <comp.lang.forth>.

I came in late to this thread: What happened to him???
Was he ill for a long time??? Was it an accident???
