  The first 2 are perfectly reasonable, except that the &lt;br&gt; 2nd one makes no sense -- do you mean that you put &lt;br&gt; a blank line between declarations and statements? I see &lt;br&gt; no point in putting more than one blank line before return, since &lt;br&gt; presumably it will be immediately followed by a line with &lt;br&gt; just a closing brace and 2 blank lines.   Also, having the statement on a separate line makes code &lt;br&gt; coverage tests more useful. For example, gcov has line based &lt;br&gt; granularity and can tell you how often each line has been &lt;br&gt; executed in your test suite. If the statement and &lt;br&gt; the condition appear on the same line, then it &lt;br&gt; generates less accurate reports.

  Like void! &lt;br&gt; I don&#39;t think the original K&amp;amp;R even mentions malloc. They do briefly &lt;br&gt; describe calloc, which is shown as returning char* so a cast is required.

  That is exactly the reason I asked, to understand why it works for C99 &lt;br&gt; and not for C89 &lt;br&gt; I won&#39;t use such a construct in C89 of course, I&#39;m trying to &lt;br&gt; understand (and I think i do understand now) why it works (or does &lt;br&gt; not!!) this way in C89 &lt;br&gt; Why is this hard to understand?

  No, I misunderstood. He is *not* using -std=c99 and attempting to use a &lt;br&gt; c99 construct. I misread &#39;without&#39; as &#39;with&#39; in &lt;br&gt; &amp;gt; The above small program when compiled without the -std=c99 option &lt;br&gt; This reading error was probably triggered by my inability to realize &lt;br&gt; that someone might try to use a c99-only construct in a c89 environment
