Not sure exactly what you mean by your subject or your questions.
Anything is possible, generally speaking, it's usually the matter of
time and effort. As to "when and how", the former is for you to decide
and the latter is in the details which you didn't supply.

Define "interface for backward compatibility". For what? By whom?
Do you mean C++ ABI? Backward compatibility is never impossible but
we can't communicate about it with telepathy.
