Oh, the 1980s weren't /that/ bad!
The only vaguely C++-related thing I remember from the 1980s is a
classmate (Johan) who played with Turbo C a bit in the school computer
room, in 1988. I took one look and was intimidated by all those curly
brackets -- I had only used ABC-BASIC and very little Turbo Pascal at
the time.
I can't remember hearing about C++ until around 1991. Then I didn't
use it myself until 1997 or 1998. Then it took a few more years until
a coworker showed me how I /really/ should use it ...
