I solved this on my own fairly quickly, but want to share in case it
helps someone else banging their head against a virtual wall.

If you are using a DSN (ODBC connection), check the driver and make
sure you are using the "SQL Server" driver, v2000.85.1132.00 and not
the "SQL Native Client" driver, v2005.90.3042.20.
ps, CR 8.5 is my clients choice, not mine.
